  • So long, passports? Why facial recognition could be ‘the future of air travel’ | Globalnews.ca

should be focusing on improving the customer experience,” he says. Air Canada is piloting facial recognition technology at two Canadian airports, allowing passengers to board and enter lounges without a physical ID. This technology is the first step towards a \”future of air travel\” in the country, with the potential to reduce anxiety and allow for a smoother boarding process. However, there are privacy concerns around the use of biometric data, and other barriers to the technology becoming a reality. Technology glitches can lead to delays, and it remains to be seen whether this is the area customers wanted the airline to focus on after a year of \”travel chaos\”. Follow us on Facebook to stay up to date on the latest developments in facial recognition technology and its implications for air travel.

Quebec Premier François Legault is defending his government\’s failure to meet a key campaign promise of offering kindergarten classes beginning at four years old to all the province\’s children. The Coalition Avenir Québec party originally promised to open 5,000 classes within five years, but that target was later dropped to 2,600 classes by 2025-26. Education Minister Bernard Drainville said that even the lower goal would not be met due to a shortage of teachers, pushing the timeline back to 2029-30. Legault said he still believes in his promise to offer universal pre-kindergarten, which he says will especially benefit children with learning disabilities. • Section of 102 Avenue in downtown Edmonton will remain open to vehicles – Edmonton | Globalnews.ca

The City of Edmonton has voted down a motion to make a portion of 102 Avenue in downtown Edmonton vehicle-free. The proposal would have seen the area between 99 Street and 103 Street accessible only to pedestrians. Councillors who voted against the motion cited the lack of energy and storefronts in the area, while those in favour argued that pedestrian-only areas can help re-energize the downtown core. The Edmonton Downtown Business Association, the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce and the YMCA voiced opposition to the motion. City administration also did not recommend keeping the avenue closed to traffic. Despite the motion being voted down, councillors said they were open to discussing pedestrian-only areas in Edmonton in future discussions. • What the Ardern, Sturgeon resignations show about the ‘tightrope’ women walk in politics – National | Globalnews.ca

The recent resignations of two prominent female world leaders – Nicola Sturgeon in Scotland and Jacinda Ardern in New Zealand – have raised questions about the additional pressures on female politicians and whether enough is being done to remove the hurdles they face. Women in politics face additional scrutiny and challenges, such as the pressure to balance family life with their political career, and are often subject to sexist attacks and misogyny. Canadian politicians and political observers have noted the problem of treating women leaders with respect in the Canadian context. Women like Catherine McKenna, Chrystia Freeland, Laurel Collins, and Karen Vecchio have all faced personal attacks, yet continue to strive for positive change and equality. To better support women in politics, Canada must continue to remove barriers and lift up female leaders.
