  • Marriyum terms \’Jail Bharo\’ conspiracy against Pakistan | The Express Tribune

    [

    ISLAMABAD:

Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Wednesday alleged that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan’s ‘Jail Bharo’ movement is a conspiracy against the country.

Addressing a press conference, the minister said the underprivileged segments of society were suffering because of the former premier’s \’thefts and robberies\’.

Marriyum maintained that Imran was evading cases before various institutions including high courts, district courts, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) as he did not have any answers.

“After several abandoned plans in the past nine months, he has hatched a new conspiracy in the form of the Jail Bharo movement,” she said, adding the movement should be called Jail Bacho (save from incarceration).

Calling the movement a “drama”, she questioned why 200 innocent people were being arrested when Imran Khan was the one being summoned and PTI leaders were being asked about the cypher cnspiracy and Toshakhana (gift depository) case.

“These are not political arrests, these are criminal arrests,\” she stated and reiterated that Imran needed to give answers.

“Nawaz Sharif went to jail with his children. You [Imran] stay in your Zaman Park bunker with your children roaming in Britain,” she said and asked why others should go to jail while the \”criminal\” was sitting in his residence.

She maintained that the Jail Bharo movement was not for the populace, but was rather a conspiracy against the country.

“If you sympathized with the country why did you ruin foreign relations and hike petrol, LNG, sugar, and flour prices during your tenure,” she questioned.

Marriyum furthered that Imran himself used to call PML-Q leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi the “biggest dacoit of the country” but was now supporting him and praising him for becoming party leader.

She stated that Imran alleged a foreign conspiracy after his ouster and now claims that there was no conspiracy.

“He filled his pockets during his term and left. After the constitutional vote of no confidence against him, he forced ministers, the National Assembly speaker and the president to behave in an unconstitutional manner,” she added.

The information minister continued that he asked his supporters to storm the Lahore High Court (LHC) when the court summoned him, thereby leading people astray and attacking the judiciary.

“He will not stop,” she said.

According to the minister, the ‘Jail Bharo’ “drama” should begin with Imran’s arrest after he “robbed and harmed the country” but had no answers for anything.

“That is why he is starting this movement,” she added.

Marriyum maintained that the “performance” needed to be shut down.

Imran Khan on Wednesday officially announced the beginning of the party\’s Jail Bharo Tehreek – a drive to court arrests in an effort to register its protest against the \”attack\” on fundamental rights and the economic \”meltdown\” brought on by the incumbent government.

Taking to Twitter, the former premier elaborated upon two reasons behind the protest movement: \”One, it is a peaceful, non-violent protest against the attack on our constitutionally-guaranteed fundamental rights […] Two, it is against the economic meltdown brought on by cabal of crooks who have money laundered billions in looted wealth and gotten NROs for themselves while crushing the people, especially the poor and middle class, under the burden of spiralling inflation and rising unemployment.\”

He lamented not only the economic woes of the nation but also the \”sham FIRs and NAB cases, custodial torture, attacks on journalists and social media people\” that PTI\’s supporters and leaders have faced since the party\’s ouster from the government.

Read Thousands of workers will court arrest: PTI

Previously, the PTI maintained that the goal of courting arrests by its workers and supporters is to drive the country towards the \”establishment of the rule of law\” and to push the government to call general elections.

In a video posted on the PTI\’s official Twitter account earlier today, the PTI chief urged all citizens to join the party\’s movement to build a \”free and prosperous Pakistan\”.

\”That is only possible if the state protects your fundamental rights, therefore, this Jail Bharo movement is a jihad [holy war]\” which he deemed synonymous with \”freedom\”.

\”I believe the more of you that would participate, the sooner we will arrive at our objectives, that we will attain true freedom for our country,\” he added.

    PTI all set

Meanwhile, PTI stalwarts Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Asad Umar volunteered to court arrest in Lahore to formally begin the drive.

Speaking to the media outside PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s residence in the provincial capital, senior vice president Fawad Chaudhry announced that the “historic movement” would commence from Lahore.

Both senior party leaders and activists will court arrests to the authorities at Faisal Chowk on Mall Road, he said.

Fawad maintained that during a meeting, the PTI leadership had decided that all senior party leaders and workers would court arrest to support the party\’s new drive.

Senior party leaders Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Asad Umar have volunteered to court arrests on the first day of the movement, he added.

However, the participants of the meeting insisted that the party should stick to the programme that had already been decided.

Meanwhile, party sources indicated that PTI leaders, former Punjab governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema, Waleed Iqbal and former Punjab education minister Dr Murad Raas would also present themselves for arrest on the first day of the movement.

    Lahore under Section 144

On the other hand, the caretaker provincial government has already imposed Section 144 for a week in three areas of the provincial capital, including Mall Road.

As per an official notification issued by the additional chief secretary last Monday, the government had outlawed all gatherings, protests and processions from Mian Mir Bridge to Istanbul Chowk on Mall Road, including its immediate vicinity, the Civil Secretariat and its adjoining roads and Main Boulevard Gulberg.

The notification stated that Section 144 prohibited all kinds of assemblies, gatherings, rallies, processions, demonstrations, protests, and other similar activities in these areas.

It added that rallies and protests posed significant security risks as Mall Road and main boulevard Gulberg Lahore were historically significant and contained business centres as well as highly sensitive historical installations.

“Moreover, Pakistan Super League would shift in Lahore from February 26, where a large number of spectators are likely to visit Qaddafi Stadium, via Main Boulevard Gulberg. Hence, the government imposes Section 144 in Lahore,” the notification said.

On the other hand, the ruling coalition appears to be at odds with each other about what the government\’s next move should be.

According to political sources, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Awami National Party (ANP) have advised the government not to arrest the PTI workers.

A faction of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is also against making arrests. However, the party’s central chief organiser is an active supporter of the arrests.

  • Farhan faces the music | The Express Tribune

    [

You best believe Farhan Saeed isn\’t the one to receive flak and not hit back. The singer-turned-actor recently bore the brunt after he replied to a Twitter user who shared how Turkish celebrities had been busy raising funds for the victims of the deadly earthquakes that occurred earlier this month.

A fundraising drive conducted by eight national TV stations and other Turkish celebrities who responded to requests for donations collected approximately $6.1 billion for Turkiye\’s earthquake victims. Turkey\’s new campaign for earthquake affectees, dubbed Turkey One Heart, was established by several Turkish television and radio stations who joined forces to stage a relief drive for the survivors of last week\’s catastrophe.

The said tweep took to the micro-blogging website and posted a picture of Saeed with his Mere Humsafar co-star, Hania Aamir, from a local award ceremony that took place in Toronto. \”Turkish celebrities raising funds for earthquake victims while Pakistani celebrities jetted off for an award function during floods,\” the user criticised. He went on to add, \” Sad. The nations that don’t stand up for themselves deserve this and worse.\”

To this, Saeed clapped back, \”First, revenue generated was for flood victims.\” He further shared, \”Secondly, all these telethons that happen in Pakistan, artists raise funds. For all the Shaukat Khanum hospitals, artists have raised most of the funds with Imran Khan, but with an inferiority complex like yours, you’ll always like others better. So carry on.\”

First, revenue gen was for flood victims.

    So carry on. https://t.co/mixuC7Sc8D

    — Farhan Saeed (@farhan_saeed) February 20, 2023

The Suno Chanda actor\’s response irked many. \”I get where you are coming from, but right now, it is not about the revenue but about the angle of insensitivity that cannot be brushed under the rug, the award show was happening at the exact same time when millions of people had lost their homes and lives in the floods.\”

Another added, \”You only did one formal tweet about floods. Your Instagram feed has nothing about floods on those dates. Go and see Burak\’s, Ozge, Yuldiz\’s Instagram feeds and stories full of rescue messages and donation calls. Sit down. The more you talk, the more we hate your privilege.\”

One more tweep commented, \”It’s not about the revenue or funds but the insensitivity that was displayed, people had lost their lives, houses and everything yet the fraternity went for an award show. They could have raised voices being in Pakistan, being on the ground yet they went and it’s insensitive.\”

One more added, \”I’m really sorry to break it to you but Hum Awards happened as per schedule just like all the years and after the backlash they finally decided to donate a small portion of revenue to the flood victims, I repeat a small portion. Not the whole revenue.\”

    — ✨ (@goldrushh____) February 21, 2023

A user demanded Saeed be ashamed, instead of clapping back. \”The sensible thing would be to feel ashamed. Half of the country was underwater mean while our actors were in Canada for an award show. Don\’t BS the public with revenue generated was for the flood. What about all the expenses spent to arrange it? Inferiority complex? Seriously?\”

    — Zubair Tahir (@zubair_taher) February 21, 2023

It is pertinent to mention here that organisers of the said award show had previously announced a percentage of the ticket sales would be donated to the flood affectees.

It is also important to add that several local artists have contributed to the flood relief mission. Hadiqa Kiani has been helping with her Vaseela-e-Raah campaign to provide goods to the affectees and rebuild flood-hit villages. Anoushey Ashraf, Natasha Baig, Dino and Azekah Daniel, too, visited Sindh and Balochistan areas to raise awareness of the severity of the situation.

Apart from this, Uzair Jaswal’s concert in Islamabad was arranged so funds could be sent to the victims. Mohsin Naveed Ranjha, HSY among other designers have shared a sum of their latest collections with the relief fund. Meera and Hira Mani arranged shows to raise funds for the flood relief campaign.

Microsoft Corp has struck a 10-year deal to bring \”Call of Duty\” and other Activision games to Nvidia Corp\’s gaming platform if the Xbox maker is allowed to complete its much-contested $69 billion acquisition of Activision.

Regulators and competitors like Sony have come out hard against the proposed Microsoft-Activision tie-up. The move may allay concerns by ensuring more ways for consumers to get games controlled by Microsoft, but regulators around the world have been skeptical about the acquisition.

Britain earlier this month said the deal could harm gamers by weakening the rivalry between Xbox and PlayStation, resulting in higher prices, fewer choices and less innovation for millions of players, as well as stifling competition in cloud gaming.

Microsoft President Brad Smith told a news conference on Tuesday he was now more optimistic of getting the Activision acquisition done after the Nvidia deal and a similar arrangement with Nintendo Co Ltd.

Phil Eisler, vice president and general manager of Nvidia\’s GeForce Now segment, said that titles such that \”Call of Duty\” will not be available on Nvidia\’s service unless Microsoft acquires Activision but that other Microsoft-owned titles such as \”Minecraft\” are covered immediately under the 10-year license agreement.

\”We were a little concerned about it at the beginning,\” Eisler said of the Microsoft-Activision deal. \”But then we reached out to Microsoft, and they were very open about wanting to enable cloud gaming and work with us on a 10-year license agreement. So over time, they made us more and more comfortable with it.\”

Eisler said Nvidia is not paying Microsoft for access to the titles, which is the same arrangement the company has with other gaming companies such as \”Fortnite\” maker Epic Games. Instead, Nvidia\’s 25 million customers will need to pay Nvidia for access to its cloud gaming platform and pay Microsoft for its games.

Shares of Microsoft fell 2%, Nvidia dropped 3.4% and Activision fell 0.7% in a broadly lower market on Tuesday afternoon.

Nvidia said it now supports the Xbox maker\’s bid to purchase Activision, but the deal could still be a hard sell with regulators. European officials issued Microsoft a warning about the deal earlier this month, while the US Federal Trade Commission has asked a judge to block it. The British competition watchdog has said Microsoft may have to divest \”Call of Duty.\”

Smith said he hoped that rival Sony Group Corp  will consider doing the same type of deal with Nvidia.

Sony has led opposition to the Microsoft-Activision deal, saying last year it was \”bad for competition, bad for the gaming industry and bad for gamers themselves.\”

Apart from Sony and Nvidia, other companies including Alphabet Inc\’s Google had expressed concerns to the FTC about the deal, according to media reports.

Microsoft has pledged to keep \”Call of Duty\” on Sony\’s PlayStation. The popularity of the first-person shooter franchise is undimmed nearly two decades after launch, with the latest installment achieving $1 billion sales in its first 10 days in October.

The US tech giant has said the deal is about more than \”Call of Duty.\” It has said buying the company that also makes \”Overwatch\” and \”Candy Crush\” would charge its growth in mobile, PC, and cloud gaming, as well as consoles, helping it compete with the likes of Tencent  as well as Sony.

  • Pakistan seeks breakthroughs in high-level US trade talks | The Express Tribune

    [

    WASHINGTON:

Pakistan is looking for breakthroughs in agriculture and information technology during the first ministerial level meeting of a US-Pakistani trade and investment body in seven years, Pakistan\’s commerce minister said on Tuesday.

Commerce Minister Syed Naveed Qamar will meet on Thursday with US Trade Representative Katherine Tai and other senior U.S. officials under the US-Pakistan Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA).

Qamar told Reuters the meeting would strengthen ties between the two countries that had been strained in recent years by political tensions, and could help boost bilateral trade in goods and services, which the Pakistani embassy said now totalled about $12 billion.

\”It is important that we start talking,\” he said. \”These were supposed to be annual meetings, but for one reason or another, they have been on the backburner for so long. Now that we are starting, there are many areas where we expect some breakthroughs, and that is on both sides.\”

No comment was immediately available from Tai\’s office, which included the meeting in its public calendar.

Ties between Islamabad and Washington, once close allies, have just started to warm after some years of frosty relations, mostly due to concerns about Pakistan\’s alleged support of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Pakistan denies this support.

Qamar said Pakistan was looking to increase its exports of mangoes to the United States, and ensure smooth, increased trade in information technology and computer programming services. The U.S. side was looking to boost exports of beef and soybeans.

\”When we talk about trade, we\’re talking about the entire spectrum, but we\’re focusing on these things because that\’s where things would start happening right away,\” he said.

Pakistan also hoped to attract more U.S. investment, with a particular focus on IT and pharmaceuticals, after a long lull during which China became the dominant investor, he said.

\”What we don\’t want is for one country to have an open field. We want that this should be an open competitive environment,\” he said.

Pakistan was well-placed to help diversify U.S. supply chains that were dependent on China before COVID-19, but have started to shift toward other regional suppliers. It could serve as a gateway to Central Asia, Qamar said.

  • Sana accuses SC judges of \’bias\’ against PML-N | The Express Tribune

    [

    ISLAMABAD:

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Wednesday alleged that Supreme Court judges Ijazul Ahsan and Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi were biased against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

In a statement, the PML-N senior leader said that Justice Ahsan was the supervising judge in the case against party supremo Nawaz Sharif and \”justice was not expected from him\”.

He also questioned the impartiality of Justice Naqvi, claiming that irrefutable evidence had emerged in the audio leaks case that the judge was hearing.

Justice Naqvi is heading the bench in the case of misconduct in the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) against an apex court judge after audio leaks emerged purportedly featuring a conversation about the fixation of the case before a particular bench or judge with former Punjab chief minister Pervaiz Elahi.

Read Lawyers bodies to move SJC against SC judge

Sana furthered that both the judges have given adverse judgments in several cases related to Nawaz and Shehbaz Sharif, including the Panama case, party leadership case, Pak Patan allotment case and the Ramzan Sugar Mills case.

\”It has become a tradition in law and judiciary that controversial judges voluntarily recuse themselves from hearing the relevant case,\” he said.

The home minister added that there is also a tradition of removing controversial judges from a bench at the request of the aggrieved party.

Sana maintained that the PML-N legal team will ask the two judges to withdraw from the benches hearing the cases of Nawaz Sharif and other party leaders.
