  • Apple takes another step towards ads on TV Plus

    Apple has made a major move in the streaming world by hiring Lauren Fry, an advertising executive, to help build a video advertising business for its Apple TV Plus streaming service. Fry\’s hiring signals Apple\’s intent to move into ads on Apple TV Plus, which is currently only available with a paid subscription. An ad-supported tier that would presumably be more affordable than the current subscription model could be a way for Apple to bring in new subscribers. This move is very common among streaming services, as Netflix, Disney Plus, and HBO Max have all launched ad-supported tiers of their services in the past year. Apple has yet to comment on Fry\’s hiring, but it appears they are taking steps to run ads alongside their shows.

  • CJP takes suo motu notice over delay in K-P, Punjab elections | The Express Tribune

    The Supreme Court of Pakistan has constituted a nine-member larger bench, led by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, to hear a suo motu matter regarding the announcement of date to hold elections for Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa assemblies. This follows a petition filed by Ghulam Mehmood Dogar and a division bench\’s warning that there was an eminent danger of violation of the Constitution. The bench will consider three questions, if deemed appropriate: who has the constitutional responsibility and authority for appointing the date for the holding of a general election to a provincial assembly, upon its dissolution in the various situations envisaged by and under the Constitution; how and when is this constitutional responsibility to be discharged; and what are the constitutional responsibilities and duties of the federation and the province with regard to the holding of the general election. With the Supreme Court taking up this important matter, the citizens of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have the assurance that the constitutional and legal requirements for holding elections in the two provinces will be fulfilled.     Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial has taken suo motu notice of the delay in conducting polls in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and has formed a nine-member bench to oversee the issue. The bench includes Justice Ijazul Ahsan, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Yahya Afridi, Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Athar Minallah. The case has been fixed for a hearing tomorrow (Thursday) at 2pm. The development follows President Dr Arif Alvi\’s announcement that elections for Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa assemblies will be held on April 9 (Sunday). The ECP has called an emergency meeting to discuss the issue. Last year, Imran Khan announced that his governments in Punjab and KP would dissolve their assemblies to pave the way for fresh elections, and as per the constitution, fresh elections must be held within three months.   • Mohammad Amir’s wife takes a dig at Shaheen Afridi

    Mohammad Amir’s wife, Narjis Amir, took an indirect dig at Lahore Qalandars captain, Shaheen Afridi, through a Twitter post on Tuesday.

    Amir has recently been criticized for his over the top celebrations and general on-field behavior by former cricketers and fans on the internet.

    Last week, Shaheen Afrid’s father in law, Shahid Afridi, had revealed that he had personally scolded Amir for his on-field behavior in the first two matches for Karachi Kings in HBL Pakistan Super League season eight.

    “Whenever a player doesn\’t perform, or even if he does, I drop him a message for call him. Likewise, I messaged Amir yesterday. I talked to him respectfully, but I also scolded him. I told Amir, ‘what do you want?’ You have gained so much respect, you faced a blot on your reputation and from there, you made a return. You got a new life, in a way. What are you even trying to do?” Afridi said.

    However, Narjis seems to believe that people are showing double standards as they are judging her husband’s celebrations and not criticizing Shaheen for showing similar sort of aggression.

    Amir’s wife retweeted a picture, which shows both Amir and Shaheen celebrating a wicket, and wrote, ‘’This”.

    Moira Deeming blasted measures to include trans women in female-only change rooms and sports, claiming \”what most women would consider to be sexual harassment and indecent exposure is now legal in Victoria\”.

    She also sounded off over sex work regulations and called on the government to reinstate sex-based rights in the law.

    \”Surely there must be ways to ensure the safety and dignity of trans people which do not trample on the rights of women and girls,\” Ms Deeming told the upper house on Tuesday.
    The former teacher said she left the profession partly because she was concerned lessons in tolerance were shifted to lessons in inclusion, primary school students were subjected to \”erotic sexual content\” and concerns about single-sex sport teams.
    \”Perfectly reasonable moral and religious differences were being reframed as discriminatory and intolerant, and a new vocabulary was introduced categorising people as allies or enemies,\” she said.
    Shadow treasurer Brad Rowswell said he had not heard the speech but new parliamentarians were free to speak about what motivated and drove them in their inaugural speech.

    \”The colleague did that yesterday and she\’s entitled to do so, so long as her views are expressed respectfully,\” he told reporters at parliament on Wednesday.

    State Greens leader Samantha Ratnam, who was in the upper house chamber at the time, said there was nothing respectful about Ms Deeming\’s speech.
    \”It is using some of the most vulnerable Victorians as targets for these ideological wars,\” she said.

    \”It has no place in Victoria. It has no place in the Victorian parliament.\”

    Premier Daniel Andrews scorned Ms Deeming for pushing an agenda that he said didn\’t meet community expectations.
    \”We are an inclusive, harmonious, respectful place where equality is a non-negotiable. That\’s always been my view. It\’s always been our policy,\” he said.

    \”I\’m just not here to talk about that member of parliament and essentially give her what she wants.\”

    Ms Deeming replaced outspoken politician Bernie Finn, who was expelled from the party after calling for abortion services to be banned and did not support the procedure even for rape survivors.
    \”I believe in freedom from compelled speech,\” Ms Deeming said in her inaugural speech.
    \”The freedom to travel outside my own suburb, the freedom to meet and embrace my family members and the freedom to accept or refuse medical treatment.

    \”These freedoms are under threat today, and as these last few years have proven.\”
