PTI leaders presented themselves for arrest on Wednesday as the party’s ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’ (court arrest drive) commenced from Lahore, which according to ex-premier Imran Khan is aimed at countering the “attack” on the party’s fundamental rights and the economic “meltdown”.
In a video message, PTI Vice President Fawad Chaudhry said that numerous party leaders and workers, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Asad Umar, Ejaz Chaudhry and more, had given themselves up for arrest.
“Around 500-700 PTI workers have given themselves up for arrest,” he added. Chaudhry claimed that the police had arrived prepared with police vans but were “worried after seeing the thousands of people and contemplating what they should do”.
He thanked PTI workers for their response and said the movement would move forward, adding that today’s protest would be limited to Lahore and would continue till the evening before moving to Peshawar tomorrow (Thursday).
There were no reports of arrests so far by the police.
Separately, the PTI shared footage of party leaders, including Qureshi and Senator Azam Swati, sitting inside a police van. The party also claimed that those responsible for making the arrests had “vanished”.
Speaking from inside the van, Qureshi said he was “happy and satisfied” at the PTI vice chairman giving himself up for arrest first. He called on the people to “break the shackles of fear” and venture out.
Umar and Omar Sarfraz Cheema were also with them.
A Dawn.com correspondent was able to verify that the PTI leaders had forced themselves into the prison van.
In a series of tweets earlier in the day, Imran said: “Today we start our Jail Bharo campaign for Haqeeqi Azadi for two main reasons.
“One, it is a peaceful, non-violent protest against the attack on our constitutionally-guaranteed fundamental rights. We are facing sham FIRs and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) cases, custodial torture, attacks on journalists and social media people.”
Second, Imran went on, the drive was against economic meltdown “brought on by cabal of crooks who have money laundered billions in looted wealth and gotten NROs for themselves while crushing the people, especially the poor and middle class, under the burden of spiralling inflation and rising unemployment”.
PTI’s official Twitter account tweeted pictures and videos of party leaders including Asad Umar and Azam Swati converging at Lahore’s Charing Cross as the movement commenced from the Punjab capital.
Separately, in a video message shared on PTI’s official Twitter account, the ex-premier urged people to take to the streets for “true freedom”.
“Actually, this campaign will take you to a free and happy Pakistan. And this will only happen when the state protects your fundamental rights,” he said, adding that the ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’ “is the name of jihad”.
Imran also said that the more people participated in the drive, the faster Pakistan would achieve “true freedom”.
In a talk with reporters in Lahore, Qureshi said Imran told him to not turn himself in for arrest as he was the “number two leader” after the party chief but Qureshi decided to “set a tradition” of the party leaders giving arrest first instead of the workers.
He also mentioned the alleged campaign being run by the PML-N against the judiciary while detailing the reason for the party’s movement.
“The attack that the PML-N leadership has carried out on the judiciary is unprecedented.
“It is my humble request to the legal fraternity, bar rooms [and] bar councils that they should not remain quiet and should play their roles [as] a responsibility applies to them.
“An institution is being threatened and obstacles are being created in their paths. Respected judges are being insulted. All this is not appropriate.”
PTI Senator Ejaz Chaudhry, who is the focal person of the ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’, said all arrangements for the “court arrest drive” were complete.
“Our senior leaders will surrender along with 200 party workers,” Chaudhry said in a statement today.
He was of the view that the movement was “a way to achieve true freedom”.
The PTI leader claimed that a large number of people were enrolling themselves with the party to take part in the drive. “The nation is eager to get rid of imported rulers.”
Earlier, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said that the party and its top brass were ready for the court arrest movement. “Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Asad Umar insisted that they would present themselves for arrest on the first day of the movement.”
According to ARY News, the opening day of the movement would start with a meeting to honour party members. After the meeting, the party supporters would march towards The Mall — where Section 144 is imposed — via Jail Road to give themselves up for arrests. In case, the government refused to detain the PTI activists, the rally will morph into a sit-in at Charing Cross in front of the Punjab Assembly.
After Lahore, Peshawar will witness the launch of the court arrest drive on Feb 23. Rawalpindi will follow on Feb 24, Multan on Feb 25, Gujranwala on Feb 26, Sargodha on Feb 27, and Sahiwal on Feb 28. Faisalabad will join the movement on the first day of March.
Senator Chaudhry has said the party had sought 200 volunteers for the first day of the drive but more than 2,000 have signed up for the drive. He said those party leaders, who would contest the upcoming by-polls on the PTI platform, would not become part of the drive.
Meanwhile, the Punjab government has imposed Section 144 on The Mall, Gulberg Main Boulevard as well as outside the Punjab Civil Secretariat and its adjoining roads to prohibit all kinds of assemblies, sit-ins and processions.

The meeting decided that the miscreants would be arrested and the law and order would be ensured in the country at all costs.
“The arrest of women and poor workers would be avoided,” the participants agreed. The minister said the record of miscreants would be maintained and their activities would be mentioned in their character certificates issued by the police.
Additionally, Information and Broadcasting Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb lambasted Imran for “putting on a show” to create political instability in the country while demanding that the economy improves.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad today, she said, “On the one hand, you put on this show of political instability and on the other, you ask that the country’s economy is put right?”

Aurangzeb said, “The spectacle [being put on] today is that the court, FIA, NAB, institutions are calling you [but] what are you doing? ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’ that is starting from the leader’s bail.
“Movements starting from bail are ‘Jail Bacho Tehreek’ [evade the jail movement],” the minister remarked.
“What is the aim of this ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’? […] Because you do not have answers for Toshakhana, foreign funding, 190 million, three to five karats, international conspiracy [and] Al-Qadir Trust, you have started this ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’ film?”
Aurangzeb claimed the PTI was staging this “show” because the “country’s economy is being put right and […] the government is mending its foreign relations”.

On Wednesday, PML-N leader and Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique said that if it were up to him, he would not arrest even a single PTI supporter.

“I never support political workers going to jail but if someone is pressing on it, then morally the leader should be the first one to surrender,” he told media persons in Lahore.
Saad said that party supremo Nawaz Sharif spent a long time behind bars during the dictatorship of retired General Pervez Musharraf. “And even in this unannounced martial law this time, Nawaz and his family spent time in jail.”
However, he contended that Imran was himself seeking bail but was encouraging his supporters to go to jail.
“This is the prerogative of the provincial government on the treatment [of the protesters], but if it were up to me […] the police wouldn’t be there when people turned up for arrests.
“They would have then just roamed around and gone home eventually,” he added.
The PML-N leader further said that Imran had faced nothing compared to what Nawaz and his family went through.
“We have been behind bars for months … have you ever seen anyone cry? On the other hand, they start crying within days […] they haven’t even faced a tenth of what we went through […] we don’t want them to face what we did, but does he [Imran] even have an ounce of shame in him?”

The impression that God forbid the PTI is antagonistic to the army is completely unfounded and created by the enemies of Pakistan,” he said while speaking at the Meet the Press programme of the Karachi Press Club.
“The activists or leadership may have differences with someone, but it’s absolutely wrong to state that the PTI is against the army,” he added.
In a thinly veiled reference to the ongoing tussle between the Election Commission and the Presidency, the AJK prime minister was of the view that Pakistan could not afford a constitutional crisis and it was not appropriate to challenge the constitutional position of each other.
Terming the Election Commission’s response to President Dr Arif Alvi’s position unbearable, he said, the office of president was revered regardless of any person’s ego.
Tanveer Ilyas stresses need for dialogue between all political parties
The AJK premier also underscored the importance of dialogue and said all political parties, including the PTI, would have to sit together for talks to reach consensus.
In the same breath, he dispelled the impression that the PTI was unwilling to sit with other parties.

مسٹر مومند نے کہا کہ زخمی پاکستانی فوجی کا ایک ہسپتال میں علاج کیا جا رہا ہے اور اس کی حالت مستحکم ہے۔

سندھ پولیس نے ہفتہ کو اے پانچ رکنی کمیٹی کے پی او پر حملے کی تحقیقات کے لیے۔
قانون نافذ کرنے والے ادارے نے باڈی سے کیس کی پیش رفت کی نگرانی کرنے کو بھی کہا۔
سی ٹی ڈی کے ڈپٹی انسپکٹر جنرل آف پولیس (ڈی آئی جی پی) ذوالفقار علی لارک کمیٹی کی قیادت کریں گے جبکہ کراچی ساؤتھ زون کے ڈی آئی جی پی عرفان علی بلوچ، کرائم انویسٹی گیشن ایجنسی کے ڈی آئی جی پی محمد کریم خان، کراچی سی ٹی ڈی آپریشنز کے سینئر سپرنٹنڈنٹ پولیس طارق نواز اور کراچی سی ٹی ڈی انویسٹی گیشن انچارج راجہ عمر خطاب کریں گے۔ بھی شامل کیا جائے گا.
حکم نامے میں کہا گیا کہ چیئرمین تحقیقات کے لیے درکار دیگر اراکین کو شامل کر سکتے ہیں۔
ٹی ٹی پی نے ذمہ داری قبول کر لی۔ اب تک 4 ہلاک، 14 زخمی ہونے کی اطلاع ہے۔
کراچی پولیس چیف کے دفتر کو، جو جمعہ کی شام مسلح عسکریت پسندوں کے حملے کی زد میں آیا تھا، حکام نے بتایا کہ کم از کم تین دہشت گرد مارے گئے ہیں۔
\”میں اب تک تصدیق کر سکتا ہوں کہ کراچی پولیس آفس (KPO) کی عمارت کو کلیئر کر دیا گیا ہے۔ حملے کے ساڑھے تین گھنٹے بعد رات 10 بجکر 42 منٹ پر سندھ حکومت کے ترجمان مرتضیٰ وہاب نے ٹویٹر پر کہا کہ تین دہشت گردوں کو بے اثر کر دیا گیا ہے۔

ٹی ٹی پی نے حملے کا دعویٰ کیا ہے۔
ڈی آئی جی ایسٹ مقدس حیدر، جو آپریشن کی قیادت کرنے والے سینئر افسران میں شامل تھے، نے بتایا ڈان ڈاٹ کام، کہ کل تین حملہ آور تھے جو کرولا میں KPO پہنچے۔
حیدر نے بتایا کہ حملہ آوروں میں سے ایک نے عمارت کی چوتھی منزل پر خود کو دھماکے سے اڑا لیا جبکہ دو دیگر کو چھت پر گولی مار کر ہلاک کر دیا گیا۔
شارع فیصل پر فائرنگ کی اطلاعات – کراچی کی اہم شاہراہ جس میں پاکستان ایئر فورس کے فیصل بیس سمیت متعدد اسٹریٹجک تنصیبات ہیں – شام 7 بج کر 15 منٹ پر سامنے آئیں۔ حملے کی جگہ پر پولیس اور رینجرز کی اضافی نفری طلب کر لی گئی۔

شارع فیصل کو بھی ٹریفک کے لیے بند کر دیا گیا تھا جب کہ آپریشن سندھ حکومت کے ترجمان کے ساتھ جاری تھا جس میں شہریوں سے کہا گیا تھا کہ وہ جہاں ہیں وہیں رہیں۔
صدر پولیس سٹیشن، جو پولیس چیف کے دفتر کے ساتھ واقع ہے، نے بھی ایک بیان جاری کیا تھا جس میں کہا گیا تھا کہ وہ حملہ کی زد میں آیا ہے۔ “ایس ایچ او، پی آئی خالد حسین میمن نے بتایا کہ نامعلوم ملزمان… [attacked] کراچی پولیس آفس کے قریب صدر تھانہ۔ ہر طرف فائرنگ ہو رہی ہے،‘‘ ابتدائی بیان میں کہا گیا تھا۔
ڈی آئی جی ساؤتھ عرفان بلوچ نے پہلے بتایا ڈان نیوز ٹی وی انہوں نے کہا کہ \”شاندار\” فائرنگ جاری ہے لیکن کہا کہ حالات کو قابو میں لایا جائے گا۔ تاہم، انہوں نے زخمیوں کی تعداد پر تبصرہ کرنے سے انکار کرتے ہوئے کہا تھا کہ اس کی تصدیق تب ہی ہو سکتی ہے جب اہلکار علاقے میں جھاڑو دیں گے۔

انہوں نے کہا کہ رینجرز اور کوئیک رسپانس فورس (QRF) کے علاوہ شہر کی پوری پولیس فورس کو جائے وقوعہ پر بلایا گیا تھا۔ ان کا مزید کہنا تھا کہ حملہ آوروں نے دستی بم بھی پھینکے۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ حملہ آور \”مکمل طور پر تیار\” آئے تھے اور ایک \”سخت مقابلہ\” کر رہے تھے۔
بیرون ملک کرکٹ کھلاڑی اس وقت پاکستان سپر لیگ میں حصہ لے رہے ہیں، اور کراچی میزبان شہروں میں سے ایک ہے۔ ہفتہ (کل) کو ایک میچ شیڈول ہے۔

انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ 14 افراد زخمی ہوئے ہیں جنہیں طبی امداد دی جا رہی ہے۔ وہاب نے بتایا کہ زخمیوں میں سے ایک شخص کی حالت تشویشناک ہے جبکہ 13 زخمیوں کی حالت مستحکم ہے۔
پولیس سرجن ڈاکٹر سمیہ سید نے بتایا کہ ایک پولیس کانسٹیبل اور ایک شہری کی لاشوں کو جناح پوسٹ گریجویٹ میڈیکل سینٹر (جے پی ایم سی) لایا گیا۔
ڈاکٹر سید نے مزید کہا کہ 12 زخمیوں کو لایا گیا جن میں پانچ پولیس اور چھ رینجرز اہلکار بھی شامل ہیں جن کو گولیاں لگنے سے زخم آئے ہیں۔ زخمیوں میں ایک ایدھی کارکن بھی شامل ہے۔ زخمیوں میں پولیس اور رینجرز کے اہلکار بھی شامل ہیں۔
کالعدم تحریک طالبان پاکستان (ٹی ٹی پی) نے اپنے ترجمان محمد خراسانی کی طرف سے جاری کردہ ایک بیان میں حملے کی ذمہ داری قبول کی ہے۔ 2011 میں ٹی ٹی پی نے دعویٰ کیا تھا۔ پی این ایس مہران پر حملہ — کراچی میں واقع سب سے زیادہ گنجان آباد بحری اڈوں میں سے ایک۔
حملہ اور آپریشن 17 گھنٹے تک جاری رہا اور اس کے نتیجے میں 10 سیکیورٹی اہلکار مارے گئے۔ حملے اور اس کے بعد ہونے والی کارروائی کے دوران دو امریکی تیار کردہ نگرانی والے طیارے بھی تباہ ہو گئے۔
تین سال بعد 8 جون 2014 کی رات ٹی ٹی پی نے کراچی کے جناح انٹرنیشنل ایئرپورٹ پر حملہ جس میں 24 جانیں گئیں اور املاک کو نقصان پہنچا۔ اس کلیدی تنصیب پر حملے کے ہوائی اڈوں پر سیکیورٹی کے حوالے سے دور رس نتائج برآمد ہوئے اور 15 جون 2014 کو آپریشن ضرب عضب کے آغاز پر بھی منتج ہوا۔
کراچی پولیس چیف کے دفتر پر حملہ کے پی اور افغانستان کی سرحد سے متصل علاقوں میں حملوں کے بعد ہوا ہے۔ جب سے ٹی ٹی پی کے ساتھ مذاکرات گزشتہ سال نومبر میں ٹوٹ گئے۔عسکریت پسند گروپ نے اپنے حملوں میں شدت پیدا کر دی ہے جبکہ بلوچستان میں باغیوں نے بھی اپنی پرتشدد سرگرمیاں تیز کر دی ہیں اور کالعدم ٹی ٹی پی کے ساتھ گٹھ جوڑ کا باقاعدہ آغاز کر دیا ہے۔
آج کے حملے پر بات کرتے ہوئے وزیر داخلہ رانا ثناء اللہ نے کہا جیو نیوز کہ حکومت اس تاثر میں تھی کہ دہشت گردوں کی کے پی اور بلوچستان سے آگے رسائی نہیں ہے۔ \”لیکن اب ہم دیکھ سکتے ہیں کہ وہ دوسرے شہروں تک پہنچ سکتے ہیں،\” انہوں نے کہا۔
حملے سے متعلق رپورٹس منظر عام پر آنے کے فوراً بعد وزیراعلیٰ سندھ نے صورتحال کا نوٹس لیتے ہوئے متعلقہ ڈی آئی جیز کو اپنے زون سے اہلکار بھیجنے کی ہدایت کی تھی۔ \”میں چاہتا ہوں کہ ایڈیشنل آئی جی کے دفتر پر حملے کے ذمہ داروں کو گرفتار کیا جائے،\” انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ پولیس چیف کے دفتر پر حملہ کسی بھی قیمت پر \”قابل قبول نہیں\”۔
وزیراعلیٰ نے متعلقہ افسر سے رپورٹ بھی طلب کی اور کہا کہ وہ ذاتی طور پر صورتحال کی نگرانی کر رہے ہیں۔ انہوں نے رینجرز کو جائے وقوعہ پر پہنچنے کی ہدایت بھی کی۔
17 فروری کو کراچی میں پولیس کمپاؤنڈ پر حملے کی جگہ کے قریب سیکیورٹی اہلکار پولیس کی گاڑی کے پیچھے پوزیشن لے رہے ہیں۔- اے ایف پی
سے خطاب کر رہے ہیں۔ جیو نیوز، سندھ کے وزیر اطلاعات شرجیل میمن نے \”دہشت گردوں\” کو سبق سکھانے کے عزم کا اظہار کرتے ہوئے مزید کہا کہ \”دہشت گردوں کے بھاگنے کا کوئی راستہ نہیں تھا\”۔
دریں اثناء وزیر اعظم شہباز شریف نے واقعہ کا نوٹس لیتے ہوئے رپورٹ طلب کر لی۔ انہوں نے \”دہشت گردوں\” کے خلاف موثر کارروائی پر پولیس اور سیکورٹی فورسز کو سراہا۔
انہوں نے وزیر داخلہ کو ہدایت کی کہ کلین اپ آپریشن میں وفاقی حکومت کا بھرپور تعاون کیا جائے۔ انہوں نے دہشت گردی کی لعنت کو جڑ سے اکھاڑ پھینکنے کے لیے اجتماعی کارروائی کی ضرورت پر زور دیا۔
انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ دہشت گردوں نے ایک بار پھر کراچی کو نشانہ بنایا لیکن کہا کہ اس قسم کی بزدلانہ کارروائیوں سے قانون نافذ کرنے والے اداروں کے عزم کو کمزور نہیں کیا جائے گا۔
صدر مملکت ڈاکٹر عارف علوی نے بھی حملے کی شدید مذمت کرتے ہوئے زخمیوں کی جلد صحت یابی کی دعا کی۔
انہوں نے کہا کہ پوری قوم دہشت گردوں کے خلاف اپنی سیکورٹی فورسز کے ساتھ کھڑی ہے۔ دہشت گردی کی لعنت کے خاتمے کے لیے کوششیں جاری رکھیں گے۔

اس سے قبل شاہراہ فیصل پر پولیس آفس پر پانچ حملہ آوروں کے حملے کے بعد متعدد دھماکوں کی آوازیں سنی گئی تھیں۔ جواب میں پاکستان آرمی، رینجرز اور سندھ پولیس کے اہلکاروں پر مشتمل ایک انسداد دہشت گردی آپریشن شروع کیا گیا۔
تحریک طالبان پاکستان (ٹی ٹی پی) نے اپنے ترجمان کی طرف سے صحافیوں کو بھیجے گئے ایک پیغام میں حملے کی ذمہ داری قبول کی۔
اس سے قبل پولیس آفس کے احاطے کے اندر موجود عملے نے لائٹس بند کر دیں اور تمام داخلی راستوں کو بند کر دیا۔ تاہم اطلاعات کے مطابق مسلح مشتبہ افراد عمارت میں داخل ہونے میں کامیاب ہو گئے۔
وزیر اعلیٰ سندھ مراد علی شاہ نے قبل ازیں کہا تھا کہ پانچ منزلہ عمارت کی تین منزلیں صاف کر دی گئی ہیں۔
پولیس کی جانب سے شہر کی مرکزی سڑک پر ٹریفک بند کرنے کے بعد متعدد دھماکوں اور مسلسل فائرنگ کی آوازیں سنی گئیں۔ حملہ شام 7 بجے کے بعد ہوا۔
مرتضیٰ وہاب صدیقی نے پہلے کہا تھا کہ دو ہلاکتیں ہوئی ہیں، جب کہ گیارہ افراد زخمی ہیں۔
علاقے کو محفوظ بنانے کے لیے رینجرز اور پولیس کی بھاری نفری کے ساتھ ساتھ ریسکیو خدمات پہلے ہی علاقے میں پہنچ گئیں۔
وزیراعلیٰ سندھ مراد علی شاہ نے کہا کہ حملہ شام 7 بج کر 10 منٹ پر ہوا، انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ انہیں اطلاعات ملی ہیں کہ اب تک دو دہشت گرد مارے گئے ہیں تاہم انہوں نے کہا کہ وہ اس وقت کوئی تصدیق نہیں کرسکتے۔
انہوں نے کہا کہ صوبائی حکومت نے فوج سے مدد مانگی ہے، انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ سٹی پولیس چیف اس وقت کراچی میں نہیں ہیں۔
میڈیا سے ابتدائی بات چیت میں وزیر داخلہ رانا ثناء اللہ نے کہا تھا کہ حملہ آور عمارت کی تیسری منزل میں داخل ہونے میں کامیاب ہو گئے۔
\”انہوں نے عمارت پر ایک راکٹ فائر کیا۔ ہم فی الحال عمارت کے اندر موجود پولیس اہلکاروں سے رابطہ کرنے سے قاصر ہیں،” وزیر نے ایک نجی نیوز چینل کو بتایا، سماء ٹی ویجیسا کہ صورتحال سامنے آ رہی تھی۔
گورنر سندھ کامران ٹیسوری نے صورتحال پر قابو پانے کے لیے اضافی سیکیورٹی اہلکاروں کو علاقے میں بھیجنے کو کہا۔
وزیر خارجہ بلاول بھٹو زرداری، جو سندھ میں حکومت چلانے والی پاکستان پیپلز پارٹی کے شریک چیئرمین بھی ہیں، نے \”کراچی پولیس پر دہشت گرد حملے\” کی مذمت کی۔
سندھ پولیس نے اس سے قبل بھی دہشت گردی کا بہادری سے مقابلہ کیا اور کچل دیا۔ ہمیں پورا یقین ہے کہ وہ دوبارہ ایسا کریں گے، اس طرح کے بزدلانہ حملے ہمیں نہیں روکیں گے،‘‘ انہوں نے ٹوئٹر پر لکھا۔
