Researchers have identified a fungus, Fomes fomentarius, that could be used to replace plastic in a variety of applications. This mushroom has three distinct layers that can be used to create impact-resistant coatings, leather-like materials, and wood-like structures. There is still a lot of work to be done before this fungus can be used to replace plastic, but the potential for a more sustainable material is promising. If mass-produced and tweaked, this mushroom could have a huge potential to reduce plastic waste, create a closed-loop manufacturing process, and provide a sustainable material for a variety of products.
