  • Imran Khan\’s party files petition in court, seeks release of detained leaders – Times of India

On Wednesday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) began a mass court arrest movement from Lahore to protest against what it called the violation of fundamental rights, abuse of the Constitution and the economic meltdown. As a result, 81 PTI activists, including senior party leaders, were arrested and shifted to an undisclosed location. Fearing torture by the notorious intelligence agencies, the party filed a petition in the Lahore High Court seeking the safe recovery/release of the arrested leaders. The petitioners said that the lives of PTI leaders are at stake in the hands of the government and police. The party has alleged that some senior ISI officers had inflicted severe torture on Senator Azam Swati while he was in police custody. The PTI is now fearing a similar situation in the case of these arrested senior leaders. Imran Khan, the ousted Prime Minister, has urged the people to take to the streets to get “true freedom”. The mass court arrest movement will continue till the date for elections in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa are not announced.

  • Pakistan seeks breakthroughs in high-level US trade talks

    [

Pakistan is looking for breakthroughs in agriculture and information technology during the first ministerial-level meeting of an inter-governmental trade and investment body in seven years, Commerce Minister Syed Naveed Qamar said on Tuesday.

Qamar will meet on Thursday with US Trade Representative Katherine Tai and other senior US officials under the US-Pakistan Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA).

Qamar told Reuters the meeting would strengthen ties between the two countries that had been strained in recent years by political tensions, and could help boost bilateral trade in goods and services, which the Pakistani embassy said now totalled about $12 billion.

“It is important that we start talking,” he said. “These were supposed to be annual meetings, but for one reason or another, they have been on the backburner for so long. Now that we are starting, there are many areas where we expect some breakthroughs, and that is on both sides.”

No comment was immediately available from Tai’s office, which included the meeting in its public calendar.

Qamar said Pakistan was looking to increase its exports of mangoes to the United States, and ensure smooth, increased trade in information technology and computer programming services. The US side was looking to boost exports of beef and soybeans.

“When we talk about trade, we’re talking about the entire spectrum, but we’re focusing on these things because that’s where things would start happening right away,” he said.

Pakistan also hoped to attract more US investment, with a particular focus on IT and pharmaceuticals, after a long lull during which China became the dominant investor, he said.

“What we don’t want is for one country to have an open field. We want that this should be an open competitive environment,” he said.

Pakistan was well-placed to help diversify US supply chains that were dependent on China before Covid-19, but have started to shift toward other regional suppliers. It could serve as a gateway to Central Asia, Qamar said.

    WASHINGTON:

Pakistan is looking for breakthroughs in agriculture and information technology during the first ministerial level meeting of a US-Pakistani trade and investment body in seven years, Pakistan\’s commerce minister said on Tuesday.

Commerce Minister Syed Naveed Qamar will meet on Thursday with US Trade Representative Katherine Tai and other senior U.S. officials under the US-Pakistan Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA).

Qamar told Reuters the meeting would strengthen ties between the two countries that had been strained in recent years by political tensions, and could help boost bilateral trade in goods and services, which the Pakistani embassy said now totalled about $12 billion.

No comment was immediately available from Tai\’s office, which included the meeting in its public calendar.

Ties between Islamabad and Washington, once close allies, have just started to warm after some years of frosty relations, mostly due to concerns about Pakistan\’s alleged support of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Pakistan denies this support.

Qamar said Pakistan was looking to increase its exports of mangoes to the United States, and ensure smooth, increased trade in information technology and computer programming services. The U.S. side was looking to boost exports of beef and soybeans.

  • PTI seeks to counter ‘attack on fundamental rights’, ‘economic meltdown’ with Jail Bharo Tehreek

The PTI is all set to begin its Jail Bharo Tehreek (court arrest drive) today (Wednesday) from Lahore which former prime minister Imran Khan says is aimed to counter the “attack” on the party’s fundamental rights and the economic “meltdown”.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, party chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan said: “Today we start our Jail Bharo campaign for Haqeeqi Azadi for two main reasons.

“One, it is a peaceful, non-violent protest against the attack on our constitutionally-guaranteed fundamental rights. We are facing sham FIRs and NAB cases, custodial torture, attacks on journalists and social media people.”

Second, Imran went on, the drive was against economic meltdown “brought on by cabal of crooks who have money laundered billions in looted wealth and gotten NROs for themselves while crushing the people, especially the poor and middle class, under the burden of spiralling inflation and rising unemployment”.

Separately, in a video message shared on PTI’s official Twitter account, the ex-premier urged people to take to the streets for “true freedom”.

“Actually, this campaign will take you to a free and happy Pakistan. And this will only happen when the state protects your fundamental rights,” he said, adding that the Jail Bharo Tehreek “is the name of jihad”.

Imran also said that the more people participated in the drive, the faster Pakistan would achieve “true freedom”.

    Hundreds aim for jail

In a media talk on Tuesday night, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said that the party and its top brass were ready for the court arrest movement. “Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Asad Umar insisted that they would give themselves for arrest on the first day of the movement.”

According to ARY News, the opening day of the movement would start with a meeting to honour party members at 12:30pm. After the meeting, the party supporters would march towards The Mall — where Section 144 is imposed — via Jail Road to give themselves up for arrests. In case, the government refused to detain the PTI activists, the rally will morph into a sit-in at Charing Cross in front of the Punjab Assembly.

After Lahore, Peshawar will witness the launch of the court arrest drive on Feb 23. Rawalpindi will follow on Feb 24, Multan on Feb 25, Gujranwala on Feb 26, Sargodha on Feb 27, and Sahiwal on Feb 28. Faisalabad will join the movement on the first day of March.

Senator Ejaz Chaudhry, who is the focal person of the Jail Bharo Tehreek, has said the party had sought 200 volunteers for the first day of the drive but more than 2,000 have signed up for the drive. He said those party leaders, who would contest the upcoming by-polls on the PTI platform, would not become part of the drive.

    Section 144 imposed in Lahore

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has imposed Section 144 on The Mall, Gulberg Main Boulevard as well as outside the Punjab Civil Secretariat and its adjoining roads to prohibit all kinds of assemblies, sit-ins and processions.

On Tuesday night, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said that the PTI’s arrest drive was aimed at creating political instability and a law and order situation in the country. The PTI is seeking media attention by creating a drama through the ‘court arrest drive’, APP quoted him as saying.

The meeting decided that the miscreants would be arrested and the law and order would be ensured in the country at all costs.

“The arrest of women and poor workers would be avoided,” the participants agreed. The minister said the record of miscreants would be maintained and their activities would be mentioned in their character certificates issued by the police.

  • PTI seeks consultation on new NAB chief | The Express Tribune

    LAHORE/ISLAMABAD:

PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry has said that a new leader of the opposition in the National Assembly from his party should be notified before the selection of new chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Fawad insisted that since the Lahore High Court (LHC) has suspended the notification of PTI lawmakers, the opposition leader in NA should be picked from the party.

Thus, he demanded, a head of the anti-graft body should be appointed only after proper consultation with the opposition leader.

The former federal minister noted that the current leader of the opposition, Raja Riaz – a disgruntled PTI legislator – lacked the credentials for the process as “everyone knows he was a turncoat”.

If the NAB chief is appointed with the consultation of Riaz, it would be unacceptable, he added.

He went on to stress that the PTI would approach the courts if a PTI parliamentarian was consulted on the matter and claimed that NAB Chairman Aftab Sultan resigned from his post due to “pressure to lodge fake cases” against the government’s opponents.

He claimed that an organised campaign has been launched against the judges. “The PML-N has started a campaign against five judges involved in the Panama case,” he alleged and said that the Supreme Court of Pakistan should take notice of this.

The PTI wants to strengthen the judicial system in the country, he added.

He disclosed that the PTI has decided that when whenever the court calls them, they would appear before the courts. “I do not understand why the judges thought calling Imran to the court was necessary. However, out of respect for the judiciary, the former premier appeared for the hearing,” he added.

However, he castigated the authorities for not making arrangements for the PTI chief’s visit to the LHC.

“The high court made history on the occasion of PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s appearance before the bench. The people of Lahore showered their love [on Imran].”

Commenting on PTI’s ‘jail bharo’ (volunteer arrest) movement, he said it kick off on Wednesday (today), adding it would be on peaceful protests.

He expressed thanks to the government for imposing Section 144 (on the few roads of the city) and added that tomorrow thousands of people would stage a protest on Mall Road. “Our only demand is snap polls,” he added.

On this occasion, PTI Senator Ejaz Chaudhry said the movement was the next political plan of the PTI, adding that about 200 leaders and workers would surrender themselves before the authority.

“This movement was also a protest against inflation and the arrests would be made in other cities after Lahore,” he added.

    PTI writes to NA speaker

On the other hand, in a related development, PTI wrote a letter to National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf seeking to regain the key position in the wake of the NAB head’s resignation.

PTI Chief Whip in National Assembly Malik Aamir Dogar submitted the letter to the National Assembly Secretariat on the instruction of PTI Chairman Imran Khan.

Citing the verdict of the LHC, the letter stated that the largest opposition party in the national legislature was PTI. Hence, the opposition leader must be from the same party.

The letter added that according to the NAB law; the appointment of a new chairman also has to be carried out after consultation between the leader of the house and the leader of the opposition.

Therefore, the replacement of NAB\’s former chairman Aftab Sultan must be finalised after consultation with the new opposition leader nominated by PTI.

  • PHC seeks govt reply to plea against Imran over murder plot claim

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court on Tuesday gave the interior secretary a fortnight’s time to respond to a petition against former prime minister and PTI chairman Imran Khan over his claim that a plot has been hatched to kill him through two hired shooters from South Waziristan tribal district.

A bench consisting of Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim and Justice Syed Arshad Ali also directed law-enforcement agencies not to “harass” the residents of Waziristan region on the basis of the statement of Mr Imran.

It issued the order after preliminary hearing into a petition of advocate Sajjad Ahmad Mehsud, who sought orders for the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chief to disclose the source of his information.

The petitioner also requested the court to act against Mr Imran if the former PM failed to share the source of that plot information or his information was found to be false.

He also sought the court’s orders for explanation by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority over the coverage of that assassination claim by TV channels without verification.

The petitioner claimed that the assertion about the hiring of two shooters from South Waziristan tribal district had caused chaos in the area besides giving a bad name to the local population.

Also directs law-enforcers not to harass residents of Waziristan

He prayed the high court to declare illegal the act of Mr Imran as well as that of other respondents, including government functionaries, to ignore the fundamental rights of the people of that area by issuing and allowing the issuance of that statement.

Mr Mehsud sought an interim relief requesting the court to stop the government and other respondents from taking any “adverse action” against inhabitants of South Waziristan on the basis of that claim of assassination plot until the final disposal of the petition.

The petitioner contended that military operations were successfully carried out in the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas, especially in South Waziristan district, against militants on different occasions leading to the martyrdom of scores of personnel of security forces, local inhabitants and other people.

He said that the people of the area were displaced before being brought back in phases after their proper clearance and that, too, after their areas were declared free from all miscreants.

The petitioner added that restrictions were imposed on the keeping of arms and ammunition and maintaining links with militants.

He said that while chairing a meeting of his party at his residence in Lahore’s Zaman Park area a few days ago, Mr Imran alleged that a plot had been hatched to kill him and “two professional assassins from South Waziristan” tribal district had been hired for the purpose.

The petitioner said that that controversial statement had led to the negative profiling of the residents of Waziristan region.

He contended that the inhabitants of South Waziristan region had not been treated in accordance with the law and that such misstatement on part of the former prime minister to link them with terrorism had greatly damaged their image.

The petitioner said that the people of South Waziristan district were victims of terrorist activities and they had already seen great devastation, so the impugned statement would make people see them with suspicion in future.

  • LG Energy Solution seeks shared growth with employees
