  • DeSantis blasts immigration laws once popular with Florida Republicans

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis proposed repealing two laws that offer tuition vouchers and admission to the Florida Bar to Dreamers and requiring all employers to use the E-Verify system. The laws were passed in 2014 with bipartisan support and were seen as a signal of the state\’s shifting views on immigration. DeSantis is now pushing a much harder-line stance on immigration, backed by post-midterm Republican supermajorities in both chambers. His package also includes making it a felony to transport, harbor, or conceal illegal aliens, collecting data on the immigration status of patients, requiring people registering to vote to check a box affirming they are U.S. citizens and Florida residents, and prohibiting local governments from issuing ID cards to unauthorized aliens.
