  • China leaves EU playing catchup in race for raw materials

    The European Union is seeking to secure its supply lines of critical raw materials, including lithium and rare earths, amidst concerns over its dependence on China. Lithium is classified by the EU as a \”critical raw material\” necessary for the transition to cleaner energy, as it is a key component of rechargeable batteries for electric cars and energy grid storage facilities. The EU estimates its demand for lithium will be 57 times what it is today by 2050. Despite the EU securing a new agreement with Chile in December, which has the most abundant supply of high-quality lithium in the world, Europe lacks a reliable home-grown supply of the metal, with China currently dominating raw material supply chains. The EU\’s Critical Raw Materials Act, due to be published this month, will aim to give EU countries a roadmap for navigating the international power struggle over minerals, as well as to ramp up the EU\’s own extraction and refining capacity. The act will also put international alliances front and centre of efforts to cut dependence on China.

  • PM wants promotion of Pak-US trade, investment relations

    لاہور: وزیر اعظم محمد شہباز شریف نے واشنگٹن میں پاکستانی مشن اور پاکستان میں حکام سے کہا ہے کہ وہ امریکی سرمایہ کاروں سے بھرپور تعاون کریں۔

  • Investment in Power T&D: long overdue!

    Electricity is becoming an increasingly important source of energy globally, with a trend to shift transportation to electricity. In Pakistan, domestic, commercial, and industrial use of gas is being shifted to electricity, leading to an increased demand for investment in power production, transmission, and distribution infrastructure. K-Electric, the utility company in Karachi, is an example of the success that deregulation and privatization can bring, with losses falling and the company now targeting to provide 5,000 MW of electricity to 5 million consumers, including electric vehicles and new manufacturing clients, with a 25% share of renewable energy. To ensure a reliable supply of power, utility companies must approach regulators and propose long-term projects for investment, creating the right incentive structure for other cities such as Lahore.

  • S. Korea vows more incentives for foreign investment in key areas

    South Korea\’s Trade Minister Ahn Duk-geun has announced plans to provide incentives to overseas businesses investing in high-end industries playing key roles in the supply chain. The government will also revamp supportive measures and improve the investment environment to further prop up foreign investment that contributes to the country\’s economic growth. Last month, foreigners pledged to invest a record $30.45 billion here in 2022.   • Investment in emerging and developing economies: Reversion to trend is not enough

    Investment in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) is projected to grow at a lower rate than the past two decades. This is concerning as investment is essential for boosting resilience to climate change, improving social conditions, and supporting long-term economic growth. During the pandemic, investment in EMDEs shrank by 1.5% (8% excluding China), a worse performance than in 2009. Investment growth is projected to average 3.5-4.1% in 2022-23, below the long-term average. To address this, investment policy reform is needed. Such reforms have been associated with significantly higher investment growth, by about 6 percentage points, on average. To help EMDEs reach their investment targets, policy reforms should be tailored to their individual circumstances.

  • Taliban set up investment consortium with firms from Russia, Iran | The Express Tribune

    The Taliban-led administration in Afghanistan has established a consortium of companies from Russia, Iran and Pakistan to create a investment plan focusing on power, mining and infrastructure. The consortium includes 14 Afghan businessmen and the ministry has signed a memorandum of understanding with foreign companies. The Islamic Emirate is working to ensure security and will support the private sector in the security field. They are also planning to focus on building special economic zones to attract foreign investment. Shipments of oil, gas and wheat under a major deal with Russia last year have begun arriving in Afghanistan by road and rail through Central Asia.
