Australians will soon be heading to the polls to vote in a referendum on whether an Indigenous Voice to Parliament should be enshrined in the nation\’s constitution. This is the first referendum in more than two decades and is an important opportunity for Australians to have their say. A referendum is a question put to eligible voters that has the power to change the constitution. It needs both a national majority of votes and a majority of votes in a majority of states in order to be successful. Unlike a plebiscite, the outcome of a referendum is legally binding. Australia has held 44 referendums since 1901, with only 8 being successful. It is compulsory for all eligible Australians to vote, and failure to do so without a reasonable explanation could result in a $20 fine. This referendum is an important chance for Australians to have their say on a significant constitutional amendment and the outcome of their vote will have long-lasting implications.
