Your soft plastics may not end up in landfill after all, after supermarkets intervened

Following the collapse of the REDcycle soft plastic recycling scheme in November 2022, Coles and Woolworths have offered to take back the 12,393 tonnes of stockpiled plastic that was not being recycled. This has been welcomed by REDcycle founder and CEO Liz Kasell and environmental watchdogs, who have been pushing for a solution to prevent the waste from threatening public safety if it catches fire. The two supermarket chains have paid REDcycle more than $20 million over the last decade, and are now offering to take back the waste and work on a solution. BTG Logistics is also pursuing a legal bid to wind up RG Programs and Services Pty Ltd, the commercial company behind the REDcycle scheme. Coles and Woolies have been given seven weeks to remove the stockpiles and safely store them elsewhere for up to a year. Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has praised the retailers and a soft plastics task force will soon release a road map on the next steps to reinstate collection systems around Australia.
