Section of 102 Avenue in downtown Edmonton will remain open to vehicles – Edmonton | Globalnews.ca

The City of Edmonton has voted down a motion to make a portion of 102 Avenue in downtown Edmonton vehicle-free. The proposal would have seen the area between 99 Street and 103 Street accessible only to pedestrians. Councillors who voted against the motion cited the lack of energy and storefronts in the area, while those in favour argued that pedestrian-only areas can help re-energize the downtown core. The Edmonton Downtown Business Association, the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce and the YMCA voiced opposition to the motion. City administration also did not recommend keeping the avenue closed to traffic. Despite the motion being voted down, councillors said they were open to discussing pedestrian-only areas in Edmonton in future discussions.
