This past Tuesday, legendary Canadian musician Neil Young performed an unexpected, emotional rally in the Colombian city of Barranquilla. Young, dressed in sound gear, harmonicas and two guitars, sang a course about the old trees, and sang a song with the words \”one time comes\” and \”the heart of the sun\”. Young, who was introduced as a \”special guest\”, did not appear to be listed in the lineup, but was surrounded by amazed onlookers, dressed in the clothes of the trees and wildlife, happily playing along. \”Thank you, Canada,\” Young said. \”You know I\’m here only for these trees and it\’s a beautiful thing, it\’s a sacred thing, these old trees because when storms come they show us the power of nature. They show us our past and they show us our future.\”
At the start of this month, the BC government implemented new measures to stop logging, in order to protect old-growth forests. Premier John Horgan has said that record-breaking amounts of logging are now taking place in old-growth areas. Old-Growth Deferral BC is a government program that will now defer logging in old-growth areas until a later date or not log them at all. Abi said that old-growth forests are now covering 2.1 million hectares, which is more than the 1.7 million hectares reported in the spring season. Young\’s introduction was made by actress Daryl Hannah, who said that the cold season is making her brain a little foggy.
\”Despite the challenges, the only reasonable and easy answer is no more destruction,\” she said. \”More love, more collaboration, more respect for our elders.\” Please join your fellow Canadians in helping another type of elder in the small town of Ontario.
