Bangladesh is calling for a revision of the 2017 Power Purchasing Agreement (PPA) with Adani Power (Jharkhand) Ltd, signed during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi\’s visit. The deal, which was facilitated by Modi\’s close relationship with Adani, resulted in Bangladesh paying $450 million annually for 25 years, even if no electricity is taken. Additionally, Bangladesh is paying an additional amount for coal, which is 60% higher than the usual price. This has made Adani\’s electricity over five times more expensive than the market price of bulk electricity in Bangladesh. Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has described the contract as \”unequal, opaque, and discriminatory\”. Bangladesh\’s power-generating capacity exceeds its peak demand by over 40 percent, making the purchase unnecessary. The deal has been criticized in Bangladesh and is fueling anti-India sentiment. The high cost of Adani\’s electricity will add to rising prices and the cost of living in Bangladesh, which is already under an economic crisis. Revisiting the contract could have serious implications for the Awami League government and the people of Bangladesh.
