Here’s how the government wants to fix Australia’s ‘broken’ migration system

Australia\’s Home Affairs Minister Clare O\’Neil is advocating for a rethink of the country\’s migration system. She believes the current approach of \’permanent temporary\’ conditions is damaging to both migrants and the economy. O\’Neil wants to make it easier for international students and skilled workers to come to Australia and stay, and for those already in the country to be integrated into the workforce. The pandemic has highlighted the need for skilled workers in a number of areas, from health and aged care to regional farm work, and Labor has pledged to find the additional nurses needed within 12 months of taking office. A review of Australia\’s migration system is also underway and will be released later this year. O\’Neil is calling for a shift away from temporary migration to seize the opportunity of skilled people already here and abroad.
