Biotech proved a surprisingly bright spot in 2022’s startup correction

Despite no IPO in 2021, the venture capital market in the US remained largely resilient in the uncertain 2022 market. According to PitchBook, the sector recorded 1,054 deals in the US in 2022, with a total value of $30.7 billion. This was lower than the 1,415 venture capital deals worth $39 billion in 2021. However, the decline was not as steep as expected; venture capital saw a more modest year-over-year decrease (21%) in deal volume, including fintech (37.7%), healthcare tech (53%), and enterprise tech (33%).

Comparing the results of any sector to 2021 is challenging, given the surge of the startup boom last year. In 2020, venture capital deals totaled 1,143 deals worth $29.6 billion, a decrease from the prior year.

US venture deals set new records in 2022, reaching $33.5 billion in median deal size and $38 billion in median valuation.

Venture capitalists told TechCrunch that, while they felt the effects of the macroeconomic downturn last year, many were surprised to see the sector outperform other sectors. There are several key reasons for the strong performance, including strong corporate venture capital activity and resilient growth in some key industries.
