  • Sunak and Macron hail ‘new chapter’ in UK-France ties

    The UK and France have agreed on a new financial framework to tackle the issue of undocumented migrants arriving via the English Channel. French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak held the two countries\’ first bilateral summit in five years, which proved to be a productive meeting, strengthening post-Brexit cooperation. The UK will provide France with €141m in 2023-24, followed by €191m in 2024-25 and then €209m in 2025-26. This money will be used in multiple ways, including the funding of a new detention center in France and an extra 500 French law enforcement officers on French beaches who will be working with British liaison officers. Macron pushed for closer ties with the UK, stressing that \”It\’s my wish and it\’s in our interests to have the closest possible alliance,\” in addition to congratulating Sunak for agreeing on the Windsor Framework. Both leaders also pledged to help Ukraine resist Russian aggression, agreeing that their priority would be to continue to support Ukraine in its war against Russian aggression.

  • China leaves EU playing catchup in race for raw materials

    The European Union is seeking to secure its supply lines of critical raw materials, including lithium and rare earths, amidst concerns over its dependence on China. Lithium is classified by the EU as a \”critical raw material\” necessary for the transition to cleaner energy, as it is a key component of rechargeable batteries for electric cars and energy grid storage facilities. The EU estimates its demand for lithium will be 57 times what it is today by 2050. Despite the EU securing a new agreement with Chile in December, which has the most abundant supply of high-quality lithium in the world, Europe lacks a reliable home-grown supply of the metal, with China currently dominating raw material supply chains. The EU\’s Critical Raw Materials Act, due to be published this month, will aim to give EU countries a roadmap for navigating the international power struggle over minerals, as well as to ramp up the EU\’s own extraction and refining capacity. The act will also put international alliances front and centre of efforts to cut dependence on China.

    On Wednesday, tens of thousands of people attended a mass event at Moscow\’s Luzhniki Stadium, timed for Defender of the Fatherland Day. The event was organized by the Kremlin, with attendants signing up via youth organizations, state companies, and educational institutions. President Vladimir Putin took to the stage to chants of \”Russia! Russia!\” and spoke of defending interests, people, and culture. The event also featured pop stars and a group of young children from Mariupol, Ukraine. Other festivities are expected across the country in the coming days, with the Kremlin sending out guidelines to regional authorities.
