  • Taliban team may arrive soon to discuss security challenges

    اسلام آباد: افغان طالبان کی عبوری حکومت کا ایک اعلیٰ سطحی وفد جلد ہی اسلام آباد پہنچنے کی توقع ہے کہ وہ پاکستانی حکام کے ساتھ افغانستان میں مقیم تحریک طالبان پاکستان (ٹی ٹی پی) کی جانب سے پاکستان کو درپیش سیکیورٹی چیلنجز پر ایک تازہ خطرے کے انتباہ کے درمیان تبادلہ خیال کرے گا۔

    سفارتی ذرائع نے بتایا بزنس ریکارڈر افغان عبوری حکومت کا ایک وفد جلد ہی اسلام آباد پہنچنے والا ہے جس میں پاکستانی وفد کی سربراہی وزیر دفاع خواجہ آصف اور ڈائریکٹر جنرل انٹر سروسز انٹیلی جنس (آئی ایس آئی) لیفٹیننٹ جنرل ندیم کے ساتھ گزشتہ ماہ ہونے والے اعلیٰ سطحی دورے کے بعد ہو گی۔ انجم کابل۔

    At a high-level National Apex Committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, he urged lawmakers to rise above personal likes and dislikes for the country to rise like an \”economic tiger\”. The meeting was attended by several prominent members from the political and military establishment.

    The Prime Minister criticised Imran Khan\’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party for not attending the meeting held last month. He also called for a resolution through dialogue and not through the streets. This Apex Committee meeting was held in response to the Peshawar incident on January 30th, where a Taliban suicide bomber blew himself up during the afternoon prayers in a mosque, killing 101 people and injuring more than 200.

    The National Action Plan (NAP) was devised by the then governors of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in response to the Army Public School attack in Peshawar in 2014. The Defence Minister and the Director General of the country\’s spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) met the top brass of the Afghanistan Taliban regime in Kabul to discuss the rise in terror attacks in Pakistan masterminded by the TTP.

    The TTP, set up as an umbrella group of several militant outfits in 2007, called off a ceasefire with the federal government and ordered its militants to stage terrorist attacks across the country. Prime Minister Sharif said for the sake of the country’s prosperity, all stakeholders must sit down and resolve the matter amicably. He urged all to rise above personal likes and dislikes for the country to become an economic tiger.

  • Pakistan-Afghanistan border crossing shut after brief reopening – Times of India

    On Thursday, Pakistan shut down a key border crossing with Afghanistan, Torkham junction, just hours after it was reopened. The closure was due to administrative issues, according to Ziaul Haq Sarhadi, director of the Pakistan-Afghanistan joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This issue has added to increasing tensions between the two countries, who share a troubled and volatile boundary.

    The closure of the crossing, a key trade route for both Afghanistan and Pakistan, started earlier this week when Afghanistan\’s Taliban rulers closed the crossing, claiming Islamabad was not abiding by an agreement with Kabul to allow Afghan patients and their caretakers to cross into Pakistan without travel documents for medical care. On Monday, Afghan Taliban forces and Pakistani border guards exchanged fire, which wounded a Pakistani soldier.

    On Wednesday, Pakistan\’s defense minister and secret service chief traveled to Kabul and met senior Taliban officials to discuss the border issue. On Thursday morning, Torkham was reopened by Afghan Taliban forces, allowing some of the thousands of trucks that had lined up for days at the border to cross over and ease the backlog.

    However, the crossing closed hours later. Pakistan has accused the Afghan Taliban of providing sanctuary for Pakistani militants whose cross-border attacks have led to a spike in violence in Pakistan. The Pakistani delegation to Kabul also raised the “growing threat of terrorism in the region,\” particularly by the Pakistani Taliban and the Islamic State group. Pakistan has recently warned that it has the right to target TTP sanctuaries in Afghanistan if the Taliban administration fails to rein in the militants, increasing the prospect of more cross-border violence.

    On Thursday, Pakistan shut down the Torkham border crossing with Afghanistan just hours after it was reopened. On Wednesday, Pakistan\’s defense minister and secret service chief travelled to Kabul and met senior Taliban officials to discuss the border issue. Pakistan has warned that it has the right to target TTP sanctuaries in Afghanistan if the Taliban administration fails to rein in the militants, increasing the prospect of more cross-border violence.

  • Taliban demand US return $3.5bn in Afghan assets after court ruling

    Judge George Daniels of the Southern District of New York has ruled that families of the victims of the 9/11 attacks cannot seize the $3.5 billion belonging to Afghanistan\’s central bank. The money was taken by the US after the Taliban stormed back to power in 2021 and Biden said it could be made available to the families. Daniels said the federal courts lack the jurisdiction to seize the funds, and that neither the Taliban nor the families are entitled to use the money to pay the Taliban\’s debts. The Taliban welcomed the ruling, and a lawyer for the families said they will appeal. The Biden administration has proposed a plan to split the money, with half going to Afghanistan and half to the victims\’ families, but it is still unclear what will happen to the latter if appeals fail.
