  • Quebec Premier Legault won’t meet election promise to offer pre-kindergarten – Montreal | Globalnews.ca

Quebec Premier François Legault is defending his government\’s failure to meet a key campaign promise of offering kindergarten classes beginning at four years old to all the province\’s children. The Coalition Avenir Québec party originally promised to open 5,000 classes within five years, but that target was later dropped to 2,600 classes by 2025-26. Education Minister Bernard Drainville said that even the lower goal would not be met due to a shortage of teachers, pushing the timeline back to 2029-30. Legault said he still believes in his promise to offer universal pre-kindergarten, which he says will especially benefit children with learning disabilities. • Quebec legislature holds hearings on violent, sexual hazing in hockey | Globalnews.ca

Quebec\’s legislature is holding hearings Wednesday to investigate violence in hockey hazing rituals. Witnesses include representatives from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the Canadian Hockey League, and McGill University, which suspended its football program for a year in 2005 after a student was sexually assaulted with a broom handle during a hazing party. The hearings come after an Ontario Superior Court Justice accepted evidence that former players suffered “horrific and despicable and unquestionably criminal acts”. The university initially refused to testify but changed course amid criticism from the province’s opposition parties. A panel for the CHL found an “unspoken code of silence” that enables misconduct off the ice. Join my Facebook group to stay up to date on the latest news and developments from this hearing.
