    At a high-level National Apex Committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, he urged lawmakers to rise above personal likes and dislikes for the country to rise like an \”economic tiger\”. The meeting was attended by several prominent members from the political and military establishment.

    The Prime Minister criticised Imran Khan\’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party for not attending the meeting held last month. He also called for a resolution through dialogue and not through the streets. This Apex Committee meeting was held in response to the Peshawar incident on January 30th, where a Taliban suicide bomber blew himself up during the afternoon prayers in a mosque, killing 101 people and injuring more than 200.

    The National Action Plan (NAP) was devised by the then governors of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in response to the Army Public School attack in Peshawar in 2014. The Defence Minister and the Director General of the country\’s spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) met the top brass of the Afghanistan Taliban regime in Kabul to discuss the rise in terror attacks in Pakistan masterminded by the TTP.

    The TTP, set up as an umbrella group of several militant outfits in 2007, called off a ceasefire with the federal government and ordered its militants to stage terrorist attacks across the country. Prime Minister Sharif said for the sake of the country’s prosperity, all stakeholders must sit down and resolve the matter amicably. He urged all to rise above personal likes and dislikes for the country to become an economic tiger.

  • Crumbling Pakistan economy puts children’s futures on hold

    Nadia Amin, a sixteen-year-old from Lahore, Pakistan, is one of millions of families feeling the effects of the country’s economic crisis. Despite having seven years of schooling left, Nadia was forced to drop out last year to help her family financially. Nadia and her mother Miraj walk to work each day to save on transport costs, and her father, Muhammad Amin, earns 18,000 rupees a month (around $65) working as a security guard. The government’s recent tax and utility price increases have hit low-income families hard, and Nadia’s family is struggling to make ends meet. Nadia’s father had wanted all six of his daughters to be educated, but with skyrocketing inflation, he had to force Nadia to drop out after completing fifth grade. Pakistan’s economic crisis has left a fifth of its population living below the poverty line, and with inflation running at nearly 30 percent, the problem is deepening. The wealth gap is enormous, and revenue collection is just nine percent of gross domestic product. Even if the country secures an IMF deal, it could be months before the economy stabilises, leaving families like Nadia’s in despair.

  • Dr Ishrat calls for linking research with implications for poverty alleviation

    At a conference in Lahore, Pakistan, former Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan Dr Ishrat Hussain discussed the implications of research in Pakistan for poverty alleviation and human development. He argued that Pakistani migrants should take advantage of the opportunity to acquire new skills from host markets, and suggested that there has been a trend in re-adoption of local ineffective practices, signalling negative social remittances. Other speakers discussed cultural globalization and the role of technological advancements, the growing disjuncture between how migrants perceive their home country and how it may have actually evolved, and the relationship between international migration and reduction in fertility. They also discussed how social remittances impact the migration process itself. This conference was an important opportunity to explore the implications of social remittances for Pakistan and to understand how it can contribute to human development.
