  • DeSantis blasts immigration laws once popular with Florida Republicans

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis proposed repealing two laws that offer tuition vouchers and admission to the Florida Bar to Dreamers and requiring all employers to use the E-Verify system. The laws were passed in 2014 with bipartisan support and were seen as a signal of the state\’s shifting views on immigration. DeSantis is now pushing a much harder-line stance on immigration, backed by post-midterm Republican supermajorities in both chambers. His package also includes making it a felony to transport, harbor, or conceal illegal aliens, collecting data on the immigration status of patients, requiring people registering to vote to check a box affirming they are U.S. citizens and Florida residents, and prohibiting local governments from issuing ID cards to unauthorized aliens. • Gunman returns to Florida murder scene, kills TV reporter and nine-year-old girl

On Wednesday, a gunman opened fire on two television journalists near Orlando, Florida, killing one and wounding the other. The suspect, Keith Melvin Moses, 19, was arrested shortly after the assault and charged with the killing of a woman earlier in the day. He was also believed to have been an acquaintance of the first victim. Sheriff John Mina said no motive had been determined for the shootings, and that it was unclear if the two newsmen were targeted because they were journalists. The National Press Club urged all reporters to take extra precautions and work safely. The White House press secretary sent a message of condolence to the family of the journalist killed and the crew member injured. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of journalism and the need for reporters to be aware of their safety.
