Taiwan’s pro-sovereignty candidate, Lai Ching-te, won the presidential election, despite warnings from China. Beijing claims Taiwan as its territory and sees Lai as a separatist. The US congratulated Lai on his win, which angered China. Lai wants to cooperate with China but also defend Taiwan from Chinese threats. He will take office on May 20. World powers want stability between China and Taiwan due to Taiwan’s importance in the global economy. China cut off official contact with the current president, Tsai Ing-wen, in 2016 and is not expected to change its stance with Lai. Lai’s presidency may also be affected by the US election in November. China may decide to respond to the election with diplomatic measures or a show of force.
