The Election Commission of Pakistan informed the Supreme Court that 76% of PTI candidates’ nomination papers for the upcoming general elections had been accepted. This contradicts the party’s claims of a lack of fair competition. The ECP said that out of 843 PTI candidates for the National Assembly, 598 were accepted, and out of 1777 candidates for provincial assemblies, 1398 were accepted. The ECP said it had promised the PTI a fair playing field for all candidates. It also stated it had taken action on all complaints submitted by the PTI in all four provinces and Islamabad. The ECP highlighted that the party had the right to appeal the rejection of candidatures before the appellate election tribunal. The ECP concluded that it had not defied the court’s order of December 22 and requested the contempt petition to be dismissed.
