Britain plans to spend 300 million pounds on a new program to make advanced nuclear fuel for new power-generating reactors. They want to reduce reliance on Russia as a supplier. Many countries, including the US and France, want to triple global nuclear capacity by 2050 to cut carbon emissions. The UK’s investment will help produce a type of fuel currently only made by Russia. The UK aims to decrease its energy dependence on Russia after their invasion of Ukraine. The first production plant should be ready by the early 2030s. The EU and a US firm are also working on production. Despite opposition from campaign groups, Britain sees nuclear power as important in its long-term energy plan. They are developing small, cheaper nuclear reactors to avoid high costs and construction delays. The goal is to meet the 2050 pledge, but there are potential obstacles such as finance and regulatory delays. Saudi Arabia also plans to use domestic uranium for nuclear fuel.
