There has been a call for a national school meals program in Australia. The Japanese school meals system was highlighted as a successful example to follow for its low childhood obesity rates. The Australian parliamentary probe recommended implementing a national school meals program and developing a national food plan. Experts believe that providing school meals for Australian children would address food insecurity and improve their ability to learn. Additionally, the committee is also calling for the elimination of food waste and for a review of “best before” and “use by” dates. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has found that only four percent of Australian adults and children eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables. The Australian government is expected to respond to the inquiry report later in 2024.
