OpenAI and Microsoft are being sued by two authors who claim the companies used their work without permission to train AI models like ChatGPT. Nicholas Basbanes and Nicholas Gage say their books were used to train OpenAI’s GPT language model, infringing their copyrights. Microsoft and OpenAI have not commented on the lawsuit. The New York Times has also sued the companies for similar reasons. Other writers have filed lawsuits against tech companies over the alleged use of their work to train AI programs. Basbanes and Gage, both former journalists, are outraged that their works were used to power a billion-dollar industry without compensation.
