A seven-member Supreme Court bench started hearing on the issue of lifetime disqualification of lawmakers. The Chief Justice of Pakistan is leading the bench, and the proceedings were broadcast live on the Supreme Court’s website. The case will decide if people disqualified under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution could contest elections in light of the amendments in the Elections Act 2017. It may also determine if Nawaz Sharif would be able to contest the upcoming general elections. In 2017, Nawaz was disqualified for life under Article 62(1)(f). This article states that a person should be sagacious, righteous, non-profligate, honest, and ameen, with no declaration to the contrary by a court of law, to be eligible for election. Amendments in the Elections Act 2017 were made in the previous government, limiting the disqualification of lawmakers to five years.
