The Lahore High Court has ordered authorities to fine restaurants Rs50,000 for not following government anti-smog measures. They also instructed authorities to close cafes that don’t follow the guidelines. This comes as cities in Punjab, especially Lahore, are covered in toxic smog. The Air Quality Index in Lahore is very unhealthy, with the main pollutant being PM2.5. The provincial government has taken measures to control smog, but with little impact. The court had previously ordered the closure of commercial activities in Lahore by 10pm. During the proceedings, the judge also asked about the progress of underpasses’ construction and a “green project” in the city. The court demanded a report on the green project from the CBD at the next hearing and adjourned the proceedings till Monday (Dec 11).
