The PPP responded to JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s reservations about holding elections during a deteriorating security situation. PPP Secretary Information Faisal Kareem Kundi suggested that opposition to polls stemmed from a fear of the public’s verdict. He expressed surprise at Rehman’s remarks, pointing out that Rehman’s relative is the governor in KP.
Kundi recalled PPP’s opposition to election delays despite previous challenging circumstances and asserted that elections are the sole remedy for the country’s current issues. He claimed that the nation believes that the chief justice will ensure elections on time and opponents fear the popularity of PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Separately, PPP Senator Raza Rabbani emphasized that the general election should be held on the scheduled date regardless of the internal security situation. He warned that further delay would give rise to new constitutional violations and political instability that would undermine the economy.
Rehman also questioned the law and order situation in the country and emphasized the importance of a peaceful environment for elections. He criticized PTI over its recent intra-party elections and stated that those forcibly inducted into PTI in 2018 later parted ways, confessing they were compelled to join PTI.
