Researchers have discovered how a parasitic bacteria called phytoplasma affects plants. The bacteria causes unusual growth in plants and can lead to diseases that reduce crop yields. The bacteria uses a protein called SAP05 to manipulate the cell’s recycling system, allowing it to disrupt the normal process and cause the plant to produce unwanted proteins. Researchers were amazed at how clever and sophisticated this manipulation is. They are now using this knowledge to explore new ways to target and remove unwanted proteins, which could have applications in medicine and agriculture. Funding is in place for further research.
