The Seoul Metropolitan Government is launching autonomous overnight buses for a pilot run. The buses will travel 9.8 kilometers between Hapjeong Station and Dongdaemun Station between 11:30 p.m. and 5:10 a.m. There will be two buses operating at a 70-minute interval at each stop. There will be two safety staff on board each bus during the pilot run. The buses will have limited capacity with 23 seats, and standing passengers will not be allowed. The buses will run free of charge for the time being, but passengers must use a transportation card to board and disembark. The autonomous technology is supported by a fifth-generation communication infrastructure. The autonomous bus line may be extended to reach Cheongnyangni Station by the first half of 2024. Seoul already operates 167 night buses, and the Seoul Metro does not operate after 1 a.m.
