Nathaniel Veltman is going to be sentenced on January 4 and 5 for attacking and killing four members of a Pakistani-origin Muslim family with his truck in London, Ontario. Veltman was found guilty of first-degree murder for the attack, which killed 46-year-old Salman Afzaal, his wife, their daughter, and grandmother, and injured their son. The sentencing will take place in London at the request of the victims’ family. The attack was condemned as a hate crime and sparked calls to combat Islamophobia in Canada. During the trial, Veltman testified that he was influenced by the writings of a gunman who committed mass killings of Muslim worshippers in New Zealand. He also testified that he ordered protective gear and felt an “urge” to hit the family after seeing them. Police have labeled the attack as a hate crime.
