The universe is expanding at different rates, which scientists find puzzling. A new study proposes that using an alternative theory of gravity called MOND can explain this. The study suggests that there is local “under-density” in the universe, which causes galaxies near the Earth to move faster than expected. Current measurements show that galaxies are moving four times faster than predicted by the standard model of cosmology. This “Hubble tension” disappears if gravity actually behaves according to MOND. Using MOND, the researchers were able to predict the existence of these “bubbles” in the universe and explain deviations in the distribution of matter. The study was published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
