Abdullah, a journalist and lecturer from Afghanistan, fled to Pakistan after the Taliban took over in 2021. He is now living in fear of deportation while waiting for evacuation to the West. More than 345,000 Afghans have returned to Afghanistan or been deported from Pakistan. Many Afghans in Pakistan are stuck due to delays in the registration system and slow relocation processes by Western nations. Abdullah has a valid visa but has faced police raids. He has only had a few emails with US officials since leaving Afghanistan. Ahmed, a former British army interpreter, has been stuck in Pakistan for over 700 days despite being approved for evacuation. Only 175 people have been resettled in the first six months of 2023. The United States has taken in 90,000 Afghans since 2021. It is estimated that more than 3,000 Afghans are in Islamabad awaiting evacuation, and about 20,000 people are waiting for their asylum cases to be examined.
