Physicists at Martin Luther University and Central South University in China have found a way to use heat in computing by combining specific materials. The team’s research, published in the journal Advanced Electronic Materials, shows how heat signals can be controlled and amplified for energy-efficient data processing. Dr. Jamal Berakdar explains that re-using lost energy in electronics has been a challenge, but their new approach can reliably process data using heat signals. The team used non-conductive magnetic strips and metal spacers to conduct and amplify heat signals, but the method is not as fast as modern smartphones. However, it can be used in next-generation computers for energy-saving calculations. The study was funded by the German Research Foundation, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Natural Science Foundation of Hunan Province and Central South University.
