A petition was filed in the Sindh High Court seeking implementation of fire safety laws in high-rise buildings in Karachi. The petitioner wants the authorities to strictly monitor and enforce the fire safety rules set in the Building Code of Pakistan-Fire Safety Provisions-2016. They also want an emergency taskforce to ensure enforcement of these laws. The petitioner mentioned recent fire incidents in the city and argued that buildings in Karachi do not have proper fire prevention and firefighting systems. They also pointed out the lack of firefighting stations in relation to the city’s population. The petitioner asked the court to direct the authorities to compensate the families of fire incident victims and provide medical treatment to the injured. It may be recalled that the petitioner had previously filed a similar petition in 2017.
