Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced she is leaving the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) because she believes it has become a harmful tool for democracies. She specifically mentioned Elon Musk, who took over the company in October 2022, for making changes that exacerbate tensions and conflicts. Hidalgo called the platform a “vast worldwide sewer” and accused it of favoring powerful private interests over democratic values. She is the first high-profile French politician to leave the platform. X has faced criticism for spreading disinformation, particularly related to the Israel-Hamas war, prompting the European Commission to temporarily suspend advertising on the platform. This internal note obtained by POLITICO earlier this month.
