Lee ‘Faker’ Sang-hyeok, won his fourth League of Legends world championship with team T1 last weekend at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. The opening ceremony included K-pop stars NewJeans and featured impressive augmented reality. A 110-meter-long LED display was the biggest star of the event and Riot Games used it to create immersive environments. The ceremony lasted 13 minutes and started with a player being transported from playing the game at home to the Worlds stage. The virtual boy band Heartsteel performed, followed by virtual versions of K-pop band NewJeans and an AR battle. NewJeans performed a mashup of different music styles at the event. Riot Games is already planning for the 2024 edition of Worlds, looking to top this year’s event. According to Riot’s creative director, the combination of music and visuals is crucial and adds another layer of richness to the fan’s listening experience.
