The Higher Education Commission (HEC) found problems with the hiring process at the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (Fuuast). The university didn’t take action to fix these problems. The HEC recommended that the whole process be scrapped. A special meeting of the Senate in Islamabad is being held today to address these issues. The university had claimed to have interviewed 1,100 candidates to appoint 235 faculty members, but there were irregularities and favoritism in the process. The HEC recommended that the university start the appointment process over and complete it within 90 days. They also suggested that all candidates who were previously selected should reapply. The committee observed anomalies in the appointment process including tampering with original documents, irregularities in appointments, and incomplete scrutiny of the documents. They also noted that the acting registrar influenced the selection board to get himself selected as a professor. However, the university has not taken any steps to address these issues. This situation could be investigated by the National Accountability Bureau due to misuse of public funds. This information was published in Dawn on November 20th, 2023.
