Sheynnis Palacios from Nicaragua was crowned Miss Universe 2023 in the 72nd edition of the competition held in El Salvador. Palacios, 23, received the crown from her predecessor, R’Bonney Gabriel from the United States (US). This year marked the first time a contestant from Nicaragua won the competition, with the contestants from Thailand and Australia taking second and third place, respectively. In her final answer to the judges, Palacios emphasized the importance of equal pay regardless of gender so that women can work anywhere. The competition also celebrated diversity and inclusivity, with participants from Pakistan and Bahrain choosing to wear full-body burkinis during the swimsuit round. Miss Nepal, Jane Garrett, who is plus-sized, also received cheers from the audience and was selected as one of the top 20 finalists. The event also saw the participation of two transgender contestants from Portugal and the Netherlands. The gala event, attended by the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, announced that the next edition will be held in Mexico.
