The United States and United Kingdom ambassadors have been meeting with political leaders in Pakistan, including members of the PPP and PML-N. They are seeking input on the upcoming elections and concerns about the election process. The US ambassador met with PPP leader Yousaf Raza Gilani and other political leaders in Multan, as well as with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party leader Jahangir Khan Tareen in Lahore. The UK High Commissioner also met with PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari in Karachi. The PPP expressed concerns about the fairness of the upcoming elections to the UK diplomat. There was also discussion about the political landscape in South Punjab and bilateral ties between the US and Pakistan. The US embassy said the meetings focused on the importance of free, fair elections and the US-Pakistan trade and investment relationship. The PTI criticized the meetings as interference in Pakistan’s internal affairs. The US ambassador also met with the Chief Election Commissioner to affirm US support for free elections conducted under Pakistan’s law and constitution.
