Lahore, the second-largest city in Pakistan, has the worst air quality in the world. The air pollution is caused by vehicle emissions, industrial pollution, and crop burning. The air quality index (AQI) is at a “hazardous” 470, which is very unhealthy. The smog crisis is affecting the health and livelihood of millions of people, causing respiratory problems, eye infections, and skin diseases. The smog has also disrupted flight operations and reduced visibility in the city. The Punjab caretaker set-up has announced the closure of all educational institutions and public and private offices in the province on Saturday to mitigate the smog. This happens every year in October, November, and December due to weather conditions trapping pollutants in the lower atmosphere. Pakistan is the third-most polluted country in the world, and Lahore is the most polluted city.
