New flight simulators will be installed in Waterloo, Ont., and Wellington to train future pilots. A new Flight SIM Centre and Innovation Hub will be built next to Hangar 7. The hub will have three advanced flight simulators dedicated to training pilots to operate Boeing 737, De Havilland Q-400, and Airbus 320 aircraft. This initiative aims to help students transition into an airline environment, as many of them are joining airline jobs right after school. The expansion of the Waterloo Institute of Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA) will receive $9.2 million in funding, supporting research in aviation sustainability and green technology development. The facility will be invested with $1.5 million by WWFC, and an additional $250,000 will be provided by FedDev Ontario. The Waterloo flight school has a partnership with the University of Waterloo and Conestoga College to offer accredited aviation programs. The aviation industry is facing a pilot shortage, and this project aims to train new pilots more efficiently. Construction is expected to finish in March 2024.
