The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) has decided to issue a show-cause notice to Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi. This is because there have been complaints about alleged misconduct and having assets beyond his means. The council met on Friday and made a 3-2 decision, with three members voting to issue the notice. The judge has been given two weeks to submit a reply. The SJC is a constitutional body that investigates allegations of misconduct against judges. It is made up of the chief justice, two senior judges from the Supreme Court, and two senior chief justices from high courts. The decision to announce the council’s proceedings was made in order to increase transparency and prevent speculation. This was the first meeting of the council in over two years, and 29 complaints were discussed, with 19 being dismissed. The council also discussed setting up a separate secretariat for the SJC. The complaints against Justice Naqvi were made by various individuals and organizations, including a lawyer and social media influencer, a lawyers forum, and bar councils.
