The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has granted bail to Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia cases until October 24. In 2018, Nawaz was sentenced to prison in these cases. The IHC has prevented the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from arresting him until October 24. According to PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif, Nawaz will return to Pakistan on October 21. Nawaz had filed a protective bail plea in the IHC for the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references. The pleas stated that Nawaz wanted to surrender before the court upon his return to Pakistan. Nawaz’s counsel informed the court that his client was seeking protective bail, citing previous judgments where absconders were granted protective bail to surrender before the court. Nawaz was declared a proclaimed offender by the IHC in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia cases after going to London for medical treatment in November 2019. In another case, an accountability court suspended Nawaz’s arrest warrant in the Toshakhana case, stating that it would be restored if he does not appear before the court on October 24.
