The International Olympic Committee has added five new sports to the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Cricket and lacrosse, which were previously Olympic sports, have been reinstated, while flag football has been included for the first time. Baseball-softball and squash have also been confirmed for the program. The decision to include cricket is expected to increase the value of India’s broadcasting rights for the Olympics by over $100 million. Additionally, NFL and MLB players may participate in flag football and baseball-softball at the Olympics. Lacrosse, the first game played on the American continent, will be played in a six-a-side format. Squash will make its Olympic debut after previous unsuccessful attempts to gain Olympic status. Breakdancing, which will be introduced at the Paris Olympics in 2024, did not make the cut for the 2028 Games. The political neutrality of the IOC was tested during the Los Angeles presentation when the chairman addressed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war. Despite some criticism, the chairman’s statements received support from an IOC member who had previously competed in the Olympics where Israeli athletes were killed. Weightlifting and modern pentathlon will also retain their places in the Olympics, while boxing is currently without a recognized governing body.
