A disagreement between two senior lawyers of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party has revealed the problems within the party’s legal wing, specifically the Insaf Lawyers Forum (ILF). Sher Afzal Marwat accused Shoaib Shaheen of being a traitor and leaking their legal strategies to the opposing side. However, the PTI officially distanced itself from Marwat’s tweets and supported Shaheen. The ILF was formed in 2020 under the leadership of Senator Syed Ali Zafar, but its interim cabinet was dissolved after the PTI government was ousted in 2022. Organizers were appointed to hold elections within 150 days, but various hurdles prevented the elections from taking place, such as the lack of internal party elections and the crackdown on party leaders. As a result, other lawyers, including Sardar Latif Khosa and Sher Afzal Khan Marwat, have dominated the legal team alongside newcomers in the PTI core committee. Shoaib Shaheen, who has been serving as a legal advisor to PTI chairman Imran Khan since 2017, has also played a significant role. The differences between Shaheen and Marwat escalated after Imran Khan’s arrest in the Toshakhana case. Marwat proposed a strategy for Khan’s release, which was rejected by the PTI core committee.
