The 19th Asian Games will have its opening ceremony in Hangzhou, China, attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping. The games were postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Around 12,000 athletes from 45 countries will compete in 40 sports, including non-Olympic ones like kabaddi, sepaktakraw, and the traditional board game Go. North Korea is returning to international sports with a delegation of about 190 athletes. Some sports at the Asian Games will determine qualification for the Paris Olympics next year. Esports will also be featured as official medal events. China, Japan, and South Korea have been the top-performing countries at past Asian Games. This multi-sport event occurs every four years in the even years between the Olympics. This is China’s first time hosting since 2010 and their third overall.
