The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced that general elections will take place in the last week of January 2024. The initial list for the delimitation of constituencies will be published on September 27, and the final list will be issued on November 30 after considering objections and suggestions. The election campaign will last for 54 days before the polls in January.
The ECP has also scheduled a meeting with political parties on October 4 to discuss the code of conduct for the elections. Political party leaders have been sent a draft of the code of conduct for their feedback.
Previously, the ECP had decided to publish the final list of constituencies by November 30, shifting the date from December 14, 2023, after consulting with political parties.
The general elections are required to be held within the 90-day period specified by the constitution since the National Assembly was dissolved on August 9. The results of the election must be declared within 14 days after the polls.
The delay in the general elections has received criticism from some political parties, but the ECP maintains its commitment to a fair and transparent delimitation process.
