Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar has addressed world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly and mentioned Pakistan’s grievances and demands at the upcoming United Nations climate conference (COP28) in Dubai. He stated that Pakistan will ask for climate justice and financial support, including the fulfillment of a $100-billion annual pledge of climate financing, with half of it allocated to climate adaptation. He also called for the urgent launch of a fund for “loss and damage” caused by climate change.
In addition to discussing climate issues, the prime minister welcomed the inclusion of proposals by Pakistan and other developing countries in the UN-set sustainable development goals (SDGs) summit. The summit concluded with world leaders adopting a political declaration to accelerate progress towards the 17 SDGs, which are currently off-track due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and other global crises. The declaration emphasized the commitment to financing for developing countries, advocating for an annual SDG Stimulus of at least $500 billion and an effective debt-relief mechanism.
During a separate briefing, Foreign Secretary Syrus Qazi shared that the discussions between Foreign Minister Jilani and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan were significant, and they also discussed Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman’s forthcoming visit to Islamabad.
Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar highlighted the adverse impact of climate change on developing countries like Pakistan in his speech at the Climate Ambition Summit. He urged the international community to extend financial and technical support, emphasizing that all nations should raise their climate ambitions regardless of their status or geographical location. He emphasized Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change and its commitment to convert 60% of its energy resources to alternative energy by 2030, despite being a minor contributor to global warming.
Overall, the prime minister’s visit to the UN General Assembly provided an opportunity to engage with world leaders and share Pakistan’s views on major international issues.
