Elon Musk, the owner of online platform X, announced that he may introduce a monthly fee for all users in an effort to combat bots. Bots are computer programs that can be used to spread political messages or racial hatred on X. Musk stated that the platform is losing advertising revenue and a small monthly payment could help deter bots, as it would make their effective cost higher. During a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Musk discussed the issue of online anti-Semitism and the use of bots to amplify it. The conversation was broadcast on X. Musk’s announcement comes amidst a dispute with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a US-based Jewish organization. Musk has accused the ADL of making baseless claims of anti-Semitism that have harmed his company’s revenue. He has threatened to sue the ADL for billions of dollars. Musk has already implemented changes on X since acquiring it, including firing employees, introducing a paid premium option, reducing content moderation, and reinstating previously banned accounts, such as former US President Donald Trump’s.
